Summary To develop in each pupil an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music; and to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music in public schools by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to elementary or secondary students. Uses the course of study adopted by the Governing Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

  • Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

  • Provides individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil

  • Uses repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.

  • Controls the storage and use of school owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.

  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.

  • Evaluates each pupil's musical growth and performance, assessing each individual's contribution to the performance of the group.

  • Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community.

  • Communicates with parents and school administration on pupil progress.

  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

  • Cooperates with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.

  • Supervises pupils in out of classroom activities as assigned.

  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs

  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities

  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.

Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general education periodicals, professional journals, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and parent correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Education and/or Experience Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university. One to two years related experience preferred.

Must be highly qualified in area of assignment. Valid AZ Teaching Certificate with appropriate approved area or endorsement. Structured English Immersion (SEI) required.
