Full Time School Counselor at RWE

Job Duties

  • Provide social emotional counseling as needed for all students, using the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) research based standards

  • Provide crisis counseling when needed, perform threat assessments as needed, along with follow up counseling

  • Counseling for students with IEPs and 504s.

  • Increased need for counseling demands more hours

  • Weekly Counseling lessons to all grades to include social skills/emotional learning, college and career (educating students about options after schooling is over…college or into a career path), and academic (why it's important to do well in school) lessons. ASCA mindset and behavior standards are used in developing these lessons.

  • Included in the specials rotation (maybe have a classroom instead of an office?)

  • Can teach from curriculum resources like ASCA national standards, Kelso's Choices, Zones of Regulation and The Spot Emotions series (current resources we own).

  • Social Skills Groups (can also include other groups as needed, like grief, divorce, friendship, etc.)

  • Typically 4-5 students per group, lasting 10-12 weeks each

  • Social emotional coach for teachers in collaboration

  • Collaborate with teachers if there's a common problem in the classroom with students, problem solve solutions together

  • Could be a resource to teach a classroom lesson on the specific topic students are struggling with

  • Provide parent resources

  • Monthly resources sent home to all parents (newsletter or similar)

  • have resources available in hand at student meetings: IEP meetings, 504 meetings, disciplinary meetings, teacher/parent meetings, etc.

  • Parents are in need of more resources to help parent children in our rapidly evolving world, so this could be an excellent opportunity to partner with parents and provide resources that could help reinforce what we are teaching at school, in the home.

  • Promote school culture by highlighting and promoting things to celebrate, and partnering with the principal to build positive moral in the building

  • Assist on the playground during recess (help with implementing Kelso's Choices, a problem solving curriculum that empowers students to solve their own small problems in healthy ways, a way teach social skills in the moment)

  • Could work with Pre-K, maybe do one social/emotional lesson a month/quarter

  • Provide parent nights with local resources

  • Partner with DFS, law enforcement, etc.

  • Member the school Student Intervention Team (SIT)

  • Meet weekly

  • Contact parents to provide resources for info (what they are seeing at home or skills they might need at home) (proactive approach)

  • Work toward adopting the ASCA National Model Standards to build a comprehensive school counseling program

  • There are currently zero schools in our state that have a comprehensive school counseling program that teaches ASCA standards to students K-12. We are one of four states that do not have any comprehensive school counseling programs. All other states have comprehensive programs.

  • If we adopted a comprehensive program, we would have more data to support growth and student success

  • I predict that behavior issues will decrease dramatically, students will be equipped with healthy coping skills to handle increased emotional, social and academic stress in middle and high school years, IEP/504 individual counseling needs will decrease because all students are learning social emotional skills, all students will feel supported emotionally.

  • Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the district.
