The Department of Youth Services (DYS) is the juvenile justice agency for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We work with young people who are detained or committed and provide detention, custody, diagnosis, education and support to young people ages 12-21. Most of the youth served are between the ages 14 and 18. The Department promotes positive change for the youth committed to our care, and has been on the forefront of de-institutionalization, in part, by providing adolescent-focused rehabilitation to youth in residential treatment.
The Department of Youth Services employs staff in various professions and backgrounds in order to engage young people in strategies that support positive youth development. As a key member of the residential team, direct-care staff monitor, and provide on-site and immediate intervention of DYS youth in our residential facilities.
We are seeking a dynamic individual for the role of Juvenile Justice Youth Development Specialist II (SHIFT SUPERVISOR) to support Southeast Secure Treatment, 60 Hodges Ave Taunton MA, 02780. The Shift Supervisor performs various care and security activities in connection with youth in custody of the Department of Youth Services. They will monitor the conduct and behavior of youth assigned to the facility, while maintaining connections with staff members, law enforcement agencies, and other constituents. The Shift Supervisor provides guidance and direction to the Juvenile Justice Youth Development Specialist I staff.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
Supervise a subordinate staff of up to six (6) youth worker employees.
Assist the Shift Administrator in his/her absence and assume responsibilities for the operation of the assigned shift.
Direct daily activities of staff and residents including the planning of activities and coordinating resources.
Train and coach staff with techniques, group interactions and appropriate responses in emergency situations including physically subduing and/or restraining practices in order to ensure a safe and secure environment.
Advise, guide and provide attention to youth who struggle with emotional and behavioral issues.
Facilitate orientation of new staff to unit and provide a positive atmosphere for learning and growth.
Deliver leadership through role modeling and reinforcement of positive practices; Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as needed.
Maintains resident, program, department and related documentation, ensuring that shift documentation is completed.
Ensure that all unit policies are enforced; including the safety and security of residents, staff and the facility.
Perform the physical requirements of the job which may include restraints, CPR, etc.
Provide both positive feedback as well as corrective action to direct-reports via supervision.
Create and improve current systems and procedures to help shape an efficient working atmosphere.
Communicate with management any concerns or problems reported from staff as they arise.
Experience in youth work, the major duties of which include residential care, treatment, counseling and/or rehabilitation of juveniles and/or adult offenders.
Familiarity of principles and practices of Positive Youth Development (PYD) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
Proven ability to interact with youth in a supportive, safe and encouraging way.
Thoroughness, independence, excellent organizational and written/oral communication skills.
Ability to delegate and oversee the work of direct-report staff.
Competence in resolving problems and conflicts in a diplomatic and tactful manner.
Demonstrated program measurement, reporting and evaluation skills.
Proficient usage of Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
This is a Civil Service position. If there is no Civil Service list for this title, employees appointed must take and pass the next Civil Service examination when administered.
Hours to be Worked: 40
Shifts: 11:00 p.m. 9:00 a.m.
Days Off: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The ideal candidate is flexible and responsive to change. Employees in this position may be required to work extended hours, nights, holidays and/or weekends. They may also be asked to work overtime shifts in other programs to meet staff-to-youth ratios. Our residential facilities require 24/7 monitoring; assigned shifts include day, evening and night.
Please note that incumbents in this position are designated as emergency personnel.

Applicants must have at least (A) a high school diploma or equivalent and (B) at least one (1) year of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in youth/adult justice work, the major duties of which included the secure residential care, treatment, counseling and/or rehabilitation of youth and/or adult offenders or in a law enforcement capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Based on assignment, incumbents may be required to possess a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.
Upon hire, incumbents shall be required to complete and maintain a valid certification in crisis intervention, suicide prevention, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and first aid.
I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in Counseling, Criminal Justice, Human Psychology, Police Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology or a closely related field may be substituted for the required (B) experience.
