MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing juvenile detention operations; theories and principles of child and adolescent behavior; principles and practices of supervision, crisis intervention, and customer service; occupational hazards and safety regulations related to juvenile detention operations; methods used in conflict resolution; theories and principles of cultural diversity; cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid, and general office practices, procedures, equipment, and technology. Requires skill in evaluating, identifying, and handling dangerous juvenile behavior; working effectively with children and/or adolescents; intervening effectively in crisis situations; performing CPR and first aid; delivering high quality, customer-focused service; preparing and presenting oral and written communications; maintaining accurate records; using spreadsheet, database, word processing, presentation, and other software; building sustainable working relationships with other County personnel, officials, and the public; communicating effectively with coworkers, supervisor, and the public; and generating enthusiasm and support for program objectives.

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED (two or more years of college course work in child/adolescent behavior is preferred) and three or more years of experience working with youth in a juvenile detention facility or related area, including training in self-defense techniques and crisis intervention mediation, and one year lead or supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licensing Requirements:

May require a valid Georgia driver's license. Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification.

Examination:

The examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience accomplished by analysis of the application. Application must document that the applicant possesses the minimum knowledge, skills, education and experience as listed to be qualified. If selected, an official, accredited college transcript is required, at time of employment, for all degrees/course work used to qualify for this position.

JOB SUMMARY:

Supervises assigned juveniles, provides a safe environment for detained juveniles, escorts detained juveniles to court, and assists with transportation, arrival, and drop-off of juveniles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

This job description indicates, in general, the nature and level of work, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other essential functions (as covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act) expected of the incumbent. Assists with the daily operation of the Fulton County Juvenile detention facility.

Processes intake of detained juveniles.

Monitors, supervises, plans, organizes, and directs the behavior and activities of residents in a manner that ensures residents' safety and staff safety.

Ensures compliance with all policies/procedures in order to promote a safe, secure, and humane environment for residents and staff.

Reports any problems or incidents in an appropriate and timely manner to management.

Makes timely medical, psychological or behavioral referrals to qualified staff.

Maintains a safe and secure environment for both the residents and staff by diffusing disruptive/destructive behaviors through crisis intervention and verbal counseling whenever possible and when necessary, uses physical intervention techniques to gain control of the situation.

Supports the GED youth program.

Assists with juvenile behavioral health issues while in custody.

Drafts reports and various forms of correspondence.

Monitors and assists with detainee visitation processes.

Answers telephones and provides information to the public. Inspects assigned detention facility.

Physical Requirements:

Work is typically performed in an office-like environment. May work in high conflict situations and with difficult, sometimes dangerous parties.

Positions in this class typically require standing, walking, lifting, carrying, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, using foot controls, driving, talking, hearing, and seeing. Work in this class also involves safety and security risks. Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
