The County of Marin Probation Department offers an array of mandated and optional services for the Court, adult and youthful offenders, victims of crime, and the diverse communities of Marin. Our Department prides itself on offering a balance between public safety, offender accountability, rehabilitative services and restorative practices. The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Probation Department are accepting applications for the position of Juvenile Corrections Officer I - Temporary/Contingent.  This list will be used for temporary/contingent employees providing additional coverage on weekends, evenings and on an on-call basis.

Juvenile Corrections Officers provide supervision, custody and care of minors detained in the Marin County Juvenile Hall following established policy and procedure. Juvenile Corrections Officers play an important role in initiating the process of change and making each juvenile's detention as positive and productive as possible.

 The Highly Qualified Candidate:   The highly qualified candidate possesses a combination of education and experience that provides a general understanding of the issues surrounding a juvenile population in a criminal justice setting. They will have experience monitoring the health and well-being of a group of youths with consideration for behavior patterns and the social, economic and ethnic factors of the population.

They will also be able to identify problems, assess alternative courses of action and exercise sound reasoning in order to arrive at logical conclusions.  In addition, the ideal candidate must have personal and professional integrity; be highly organized; possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills; approach their work with enthusiasm; demonstrate a strong commitment to empowerment through communication, collaboration, and cooperation.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of 60 semester units from a college or university which included a minimum of 12 semester units in behavioral sciences, social welfare, social case work, counseling and guidance, psychology, criminology, corrections, education, recreation, or a closely related field.

Certificates and Licenses: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's license is required and must be maintained while employed in the classification.

Special Requirements: California Government Code Section 1031 requires that all applicants:

• Be 21 years of age or older by the application filing deadline date.

• Have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness (felony law convictions will be disqualifying).

• Be a citizen of the United States (or must have filed for citizenship with the Department of Immigration one year prior to employment application date).

• Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.

• Undergo a complete background check conducted by the Probation Department

• Complete and pass a comprehensive psychological test administered by the Probation Department or designated agency.

Testing and Eligible List: Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination may consist of a highly qualified review, application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates' names will be placed on the eligible list.

The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for temporary/contingent positions which may occur while the list remains active.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
