Summary Description: Serves as presiding officer of the justice court and small claims court for Ellis County. (Note: Due to a vacancy, this is an appointed position for a term which will expire December 31, 2024.)
Educational and Certification Requirements:
U.S. Citizen.
At least 18 years of age.
Resident of the State of Texas for a minimum of 12 months.
Resident of Ellis County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 4 for a minimum of 6 months prior to appointment.
Legally registered to vote in Ellis County.
Must complete required 80-hour course in performance of justice's duties within one year of the appointment.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
Hears traffic and other Class C misdemeanor cases punishable by fine only.
Hears civil cases with up to $20,000 in controversy.
Hears landlord and tenant disputes.
Hears truancy cases.
Performs magistrate duties.
Conducts inquests (death pronouncements).
May conduct marriage ceremonies.
On-call nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating schedule.
Work Experience:
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Texas law.
Ability to manage a budget and work within Ellis County policies.
Knowledge of the principles of supervision, including development of objectives, employee development, and taking corrective action to meet standards.
Good communication skills.
