What You Will Do:

We are currently searching for a Junior Staff Clinician to provide to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the NHLBI. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.

PATIENT CARE

  • Independently evaluate patients in both the inpatient and outpatient clinic settings in coordination with a government attending physician.

  • Perform initial and follow up visits for patients in outpatient clinic.

  • Diagnose and manage common acute or stable chronic health problems, injuries, and illnesses making assessments of acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities; refer unusual problems to physicians or an administrative supervisor.

  • Perform comprehensive health care assessments by obtaining health and family medical histories, complete physical examinations, place orders for tests and prescribe medications. Consult with other providers as needed.

  • Formulate comprehensive treatment plans to be communicated to outside providers regarding ongoing management of a patient's medical complications.

  • Admit acutely ill patients to the NHLBI wards and assume responsibility for their care during hours covered by the service.

  • Order, perform and interpret basic laboratory diagnostic/treatment tests and procedures, determine which findings need further evaluation and/or collaboration assessment.

  • Evaluate, modify, and revise care plan at appropriate intervals.

  • Explain discharge instructions and medication regimens to patients and follow up with consulting service recommendations.

ON-CALL

  • Provide medical on-call services on a rotating schedule.

  • Review assigned patient resident reports and carry and answer the resident pager.

  • Provide coverage for the post-call resident's patients, while working closely with the inpatient/ fellowship staff.

  • Notify the coordinator in a timely manner in unable to provide coverage during their scheduled time due to illness or other unavoidable conflict.

  • Provide all services necessary for patients requiring admission during their "on-call" time.

  • For each patient, communicate with the responsible attending physician or designated fellow regarding any questions, concerns, or major events involving these inpatients during their time "on call".

  • Explain the plan of care/discharge needs to the incoming on-call resident as well as the patient's assigned case manager at sign out.

TEAM COMMUNICATIONS

  • Participate in clinical rounds in conjunction with an attending physician and representative primary team fellow.

  • Check on a patient (and nurse) who is being "boarded" in the unit over a weekend or holiday and has no active medical problems. Contact the attending or designated fellow if a problem is identified.

  • Notify applicable Principal Investigators of significant changes in clinical status (such as admissions, readmission, transfer to the ICU).

CLINICAL TRIAL SUPPORT

  • Assist with extensive clinical trials programs focused on developing novel therapies.

  • Work as a member of a multidisciplinary clinical team to provide comprehensive care to patients in a research environment.

  • Screen and monitor medical status of patients/subjects participating in research studies and/or protocols.

  • Evaluate patients currently enrolled on clinical trials at NHLBI.

  • Counsel, support and educate patients and staff on matters relating to health and research studies/protocols.

  • Obtain informed consent.

  • Administer and adjust trial medication under the guidance of a physician.

  • Interpret and document diagnostic tests and studies related to clinical trial interventions and patient conditions.

  • Provide medical evaluation and longitudinal follow-up of participants enrolled in clinical trials.

  • Assess needs and/or problem areas and plan appropriate therapeutic measures.

  • Monitor and evaluate health effects related to new/ongoing protocol studies including

  • Monitor and grade side effects related to a variety of study interventions, including drugs and psychological behaviors.

DOCUMENTATION

  • Complete and maintain medical documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR); attest documentation completed by fellows in clinic once fully credentialed at NHLBI.

  • Complete in-depth documentation through written progress notes, dictation summaries (for example admission & discharge summaries), communication with referring physicians, interventions or clinically relevant discussions, and similar types of clinical data recording activities according. to medical record documentation requirements.

  • Access and retrieve data from the EMR system.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Perform clinical audits.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable licensure/certification requirements, healthcare standards, government laws and regulations, and policies, procedures, and philosophy in nature.

  • Participate in conferences.

What You Will Need:

  • M.D. Degree.

  • At least 4 years of clinical or clinical research experience.

  • Possess a Maryland Medical License within 90 days of starting the position.

  • Hold an ABIM Certification.

  • Able to manage complex disease processes and incorporate psychosocial aspects into decision making.

  • Excels in medical knowledge of all aspects of internal medicine specifically in the areas of hematology/oncology, pulmonary and critical care medicine, and cardiology.

  • Excels in effective, thoughtful, and clear communication with team members, patients, patient families, and nursing staff, treating everyone with respect.

  • Excels in written documentation as demonstrated by having l organized, thoughtful, and detailed notes.

  • Demonstrate expertise in related healthcare, individual initiative and independent judgement.

  • Provide a highly proficient level of professional health care to patients.

  • Provide clear communication to the nursing team.

  • Maintain a high level of clinical competence in an area of specialty practice integrating the art and science of both nursing and medicine into practice.
