Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Sports Staff, this position is responsible for officiating sports leagues for the Town of Parker. This position may include working with youth participants, coaches, parents, spectators, adults, sports supervisors and other officials/referees within the athletic section of the Recreation Department. Must be able to effectively and accurately exercise knowledge of the sport and demonstrate fairness in calls.

Examples of Essential Duties

Start games on time and conduct an equipment inspection. Inspect sporting equipment and/or examine participants in order to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.

Effectively communicate with teams, coaches and crowd.

Officiate at sporting events, games, or competitions, to maintain standards of play and to ensure that all game rules are observed.

Judge performances in sporting competitions in order to award points, impose scoring penalties, and determine results.

Signal participants or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to otherwise regulate play or competition.

Resolve claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assess any necessary penalties, according to regulations.

Be familiar with players and teams in order to anticipate issues that might arise in future engagements.

Report complaints made and actions taken or needed (such as disciplinary action) to the Sports Coordinator(s).

For youth sports, teach and explain the rules and regulations governing a specific sport.

Promote positive sportsmanship.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Performs related duties as assigned by supervisor; may provide some instruction to players during games in youth sports.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

No previous officiating or sports experience is required. Must be 16 years of age or older to apply.

Some knowledge and understanding of the assigned sport is preferred.

Concussion recognition training is required within ninety (90) days of hire and must be renewed annually.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of sports and how the game is played.

Ability to make the proper calls on command.

Ability to learn and understand the principles, practices, and techniques used in recreational sporting events.

Ability to accept criticism.

Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public and to handle stressful situations.

Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions, and the ability to issue clear concise verbal and/or written instructions to subordinates and other employees and report operations both verbally or in written form to superiors.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, various community organizations, and the general public.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Various sports equipment, scoreboards, whistles, personal automobile, telephones.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is consistently required to stand and walk, frequently run, occasionally required to sit, and frequently use hands, fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift, carry, push or pull.

Employee must communicate clearly and effectively; must understand and be understood. Must be able to frequently engage in ordinary or telephone conversations with speech and hearing.

Employee must be able to consistently see with near and far acuity, depth perception, color vision and field vision. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust his or her focus, allowing a broad field of vision.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and may range from moderate to high with occasional vibrations. The employee will occasionally encounter fumes, odors, dusts or mists.

Starting pay for this position is $16.48/hr.!

Full pay range is: $16.00/hr. - $20.27/hr.
