QUALIFICATIONS: As set forth in Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School

REPORTS TO: School Principal
SUPERVISES: Assigned Staff
JOB GOAL: To serve as an advocate for students within the adult structure of the
school and community and has as his/her prime responsibilities, service
to and for the students
TERM: Ten Months
SALARY: Ten Month Salary Schedule
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Components below will be used for Guidance Counselor evaluation in conjunction with
measures of student and school growth.
Components
Individual Student Planning: The school counselor coordinates activities
related to students' individual plans for academic, personal/social, and career goals.
System Support: The school counselor engages in broader school improvement efforts and engages with external resources to ensure that the school has access to the most current trends and resources in counseling.
Responsive Services: The school counselor responds to urgent needs and enables others in the school community to respond efficiently and effectively to changing
student needs.
School Counseling Curriculum: The counselor proactively plans a curriculum
of activities aligned with data and school-specific needs.
Each of these components should be rated Ineffective, Effective: Emerging, Effective: Proficient, or Highly Effective and weighted equally to determine a Professional Practices Rating based upon observations and a collection of evidence from the school counselor's work.
I. To provide individual and group counseling to students as it relates to:
A. Social adjustment
B. Emotional release and adjustment
C. Personal development
D. Underachievement
E. Academic adjustment
F. Vocational and educational awareness and planning
G. Problems relating to absenteeism that affect students' personal and academic
development (excluding clerical functions)
H. Problem solving/decision-making skills
I. Crisis situations (i.e., child abuse, substance abuse, and so forth)
J. Interpretation of test scores
K. Knowledge and use of professional ethics
II. To provide individual and group guidance activities as it relates to:
A. Personal, social and emotional adjustment
B. Underachievement
C. Vocational and educational awareness and planning
D. Interpretation of test scores
E. Information: Vocational, educational, financial aid, personal and/or social
III. To consult with teachers, administrators and parents
A. Teachers
1.To identify students with social, emotional, physical and/or mental development
needs
2.To provide resources for career education
3.To identify pupils with learning problems
4.To assist in making classroom atmospheres conductive to learning and personal
development
5.To assist in teacher-parent conferences
6.To provide in-service training for teachers
a. Test administration and interpretation
b. Social, emotional and learning environment
c. Classroom intervention strategies (motivation, encouragement,
communication, individualization, etc.)
d. Vocational and career information
e. Understanding developmental tasks of students
7.To describe possible current and future social behavior based on consequences of
past and future behavior
8.To provide information on school referral and resources
9.To provide information on community resources
To assist in case conferences involving all significant adults
To interpret test data
To provide interpretation and ethical use of diagnostic reports such as vision
screening
B. Administrators
1.To plan for specific student/teacher needs as related to guidance and counseling
2.To approve the plan of the school guidance/counseling program
3.To plan for parental involvement activities (ex., parental volunteer groups,
parental study groups, needs assessment for parental priorities)
4.To provide information on school and community resources
5.To plan for in-service programs related to guidance and counseling functions
6.To serve as resource person for school curriculum and scheduling providing
input of student needs
7.To serve on building level committees
8.To submit accurate records and reports promptly
9.To work effectively with school personnel and staff to foster open
communication and positive relationships
C. Parents
1.To identify pupils with social, emotional, physical or mental development needs
2.To provide resources for career education
3.To identify pupils with learning problems
4.To assist in making classroom atmosphere conducive to learning and personal
development
5.To assist in teacher/parent conferences
6.To interpret child's behavior
7.To recommend placement of child
8.To make referrals outside of the school
9.To provide explanation of testing materials and results

To provide information on school referral and resources

To provide family consultation/counseling
To provide family education (parent/study groups)
To foster open communication and positive relationships with parents and

IV. To coordinate services as it relates to:
A. Counseling/guidance programs with other support personnel
B. Referral to outside agencies
C. Acquisition/distribution and transmission of a variety of material relevant to the growth
of the student
D. Parent/student orientation
E. Standardized testing program
F. Student registration and withdrawals
G. Student cumulative record system (excluding clerical functions)
H. Collecting and disseminating information concerning careers, opportunities for further
education, training and school curricular offerings
I. Activities relating to post-secondary vocational/education
1.College/career day
2.Financial aid workshop
3.Job seeking skills workshop
V. To organize the guidance program by:
A. Developing and defining a plan and objectives
B. Maintaining an information file or system
C. Determining expenditures acceptable to state, federal and local guidelines
D. Using available computer equipment for facilitating the processing and transmission of
pupil data
VI. To evaluate the guidance program by:
A. Preparing the annual end-of-year report which includes:
1.Measuring efficiency of the program
2.Measuring effectiveness of the program
3.Determining the intent to which the guidance program is developing through
grade levels
B. Following-up of students who have been promoted from junior high to senior high or
graduated from high school
VII. To facilitate professional development through
A. Membership and active participation in professional organizations
B. Continued development of counseling skills
C. Continued adherence to AACD code of ethics
D. Participation in workshops for continued professional growth
E. Establishment and execution of a professional growth plan
F. Consistent demonstration of self-direction
VIII. To perform any other duties assigned by the superintendent and/or evaluator
IX. To follow Federal, State, School Board and school policies
