Position Description One of the foremost public policy research organizations in the United States, Mathematica Policy Research is leading the way in providing health care research services to federal agencies, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). We are seeking an intellectually curious programmer our various Mathematica locations who is passionate about using data to answer research questions that influence decision making in U.S. health care policy. Individuals with an interest in confronting the challenges of processing and manipulating large, complex data sets as well as a desire to become a subject matter expert in health care data are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:
  • Working with large secondary data sources such as Medicare and Medicaid administrative claims data and survey data to effectively answer research questions about health care policy

  • Interpreting requirements and specifications to develop performance measures based on cost and quality of care for evaluating the effectiveness of numerous health care policies

  • Using a myriad of data sources to provide a comprehensive and rigorous assessment of the potential of creative ideas for service delivery and payment models to improve the health outcomes and well-being of patients, and to reduce spending for Medicare, Medicaid, and other payers

  • Aptitude for interpreting data outputs and articulating findings to researchers and policymakers Position Requirements * A bachelors degree with a strong academic record in the social sciences (economics, public policy, sociology, political science, or government) or a related field * 0 - 3 years of programming experience in a professional or academic environment using SAS, Stata, R, or a similar language. We currently have openings for Research Programmers in the Human Services business unit. As a Research Programmer, you will be part of our research team in either our Princeton, NJ, Cambridge, MA, Chicago, IL, Oakland, CA, or Washington, DC office locations. We are seeking Research Programmers to perform tasks in the following areas: Programming: * Write programs in SAS, Stata, or R to extract, clean, and format data and to create variables for use in analyses * Construct datasets and prepare data files from survey instruments * Produce descriptive statistics * Perform statistical analyses of data * Prepare tables and graphs based on data analyses * Interpret data outputs and articulate findings to researchers Data Management: * Assist with data management and analysis of federal, state, and local information systems. * Perform software quality assurance and testing, including the development of testing tools using a variety of technologies including Microsoft Office, SQL, .NET, C#, Python, R, and SAS among others. * Provide technical assistance to federal and state agencies on performance measurement, performance analysis, data quality, and reporting and validation software. * Assist in the development of reporting specifications and user manuals. * Assist in the definition, specification, and documentation of data and security requirements. Research: * Assist with writing reports and memos * Conduct site visits and/or interviews with organizations and study participants * Assist with any other project activities as needed Project Management: * Track financial progress of projects using Excel * Prepare monthly assessment reports * Assist with budgeting and contract proposals Position Requirements Requirements: * Strong educational background and a BA/BS in relevant field (economics, public policy, sociology, statistics, mathematics, operations research or political science) * 0 - 1 year of programming experience in an internship or academic environment using SAS, Stata, R, Python or a similar language. GIS experience is a plus. * Demonstrated interest in data management and or program operations through relevant job or academic experience. * Familiarity with data profiling and analysis using Excel, VBA and/or SQL is a plus.
