Job Description and Duties

Will consider Transportation Engineering Technician

This position is in the Office of Asset Mgmt and Performance/Traffic data Support Branch, working under the direct supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer. The duties of this position include field/office collection of traffic data, and related office work for the traffic monitoring programs.

Field work for this position is very physically demanding requiring the incumbent to work all day in various climates year around. ( cold, heat, winter and summer) lifting ,carrying and placing equipment all day. The incumbent may be required to work outside of normal business hours. It is expected that a Transportation Engineering Technician (TET) newly assigned to this position will require moderate training because the work is specialized and not encountered in other branches.

Regular office work will receive routine guidance and review. After an initial period of training, field work and related office work must be performed with little or no supervision. Temporary work hour changes or longer hours maybe required and vacation maybe restricted during periods of limited data collection days. Operation of a state vehicle is required so requires a valid Driver's license.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Junior Engineering Technician Exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

Position is located in Oakland, Alameda County

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and is based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy.

Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs.

Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, and primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
