POSITION OVERVIEW

Become a crucial part of NBME as we are seeking two junior level Editors to contribute to our dynamic organization. In each of these roles, you can expect to collaborate with committee volunteers to develop and compile essential test content for assessing health professionals at various stages of their education and practice. The positions will be assigned to two distinct teams, each dedicated to different examinations. This provides opportunities for cross-unit collaboration to enhance resource flexibility across all four Licensure teams handling the USMLE (United States Licensing Exam). Ideal candidates will possess exceptional interpersonal communication skills, proficiency in grammar, punctuation, and proofreading, and a keen eye for detail. Knowledge of medical terminology is highly advantageous, as is experience with assessments and examinations.

This role has been designated as a hybrid role, meaning you are required to perform specific job functions in the office approximately 20 to 30 days per year. Outside of those annually prescheduled dates, the remaining duties of the role may be completed from home. There is also the option to choose to be an on-site employee, indicating that you prefer not to have telework eligibility. We're only open to considering candidates within 50 miles of our office location in Philadelphia, PA at this time.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise editorial production assistants providing editorial support.

  • Refine examination items, emphasizing the development of clinical vignettes, and edit for grammar, punctuation, clarity, consistency of style, and accuracy, while ensuring adherence to test development methodologies.

  • Develop committee assignments for item writers based on content needs and prioritize materials designated for committee review.

  • Assist in preparing the item pool for exam form construction, making necessary adjustments, and revising forms as needed.

  • Facilitate content expert review during test committee meetings, contributing actively to the process, providing feedback to reviewers, and performing real-time editing while maintaining accurate records of committee decisions, including metadata and style issues.

  • Manage and update item metadata in the internal database as required.

  • Assist in maintaining exam pools, including periodic analyses and content currency.

  • Perform quality control of test forms to ensure correct structure and composition before administration.

DELIVERABLES

  • Uphold the values and culture of the NBME.

  • Participate in training and professional development activities led by internal and external sources.

  • Ensure assignments accurately reflect current pool analysis.

  • Oversee the work completed by Editorial Production Assistants.

  • Adhere to assigned deadlines, following best practices and standard NBME procedures, including security protocols.

  • Screen exam items for outdated or biased language.

  • Maintain data integrity associated with items, ensuring the correctness of exam items and accurate entry into secure item authoring, banking, and exam delivery systems.

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Excellent grammar, punctuation, spelling, and proofreading skills

  • Excellent critical thinking skills

  • Ability to organize, budget time, and prioritize tasks

  • Demonstrated skill in the use of computer applications (databases and word processing)

  • Familiarity with test development procedures preferred

  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred

  • Experience with meeting facilitation preferred but not required

Experience

  • Two or more years of related experience

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or a combination of equivalent education and experience
