Entry Level Civil/Structural Engineer - Chicago, IL

We are seeking an Entry Level Civil/Structural Engineer with 0-2 years of experience with a utility and/or utility consulting company doing design engineering. The candidate must have a strong educational background in design of steel structures, concrete structures, geotechnical engineering, and foundations. Experience with substation structure design, rigid bus design, foundation design, site development, oil spill containment design, and design of retaining walls, design of masonry control shelters, and fire-walls is a plus. This position will be direct design of the aforementioned civil/structural design components in support of the development of bid/construction packages for substation projects. Candidate will primarily perform design calculations and develop construction grade engineering design drawings on a regular basis, under the supervision of a licensed civil engineer. Site-visits to client substation facilities are expected to be part of the work, along with occasional travel for client meetings and industry related events. Candidate must comply with quality control and safe work practices and maintain compliance with project scope, schedule and budget expectations. This position will be a member of a design team comprised of engineers, designers, and drafting technicians.


  • Bachelors of Science (BS) degree in Civil-Structural Engineering and 0-2 years of experience

  • EIT Preferred

  • Experience with Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint & Mathcad software

  • Experience with STAAD.Pro, FAD, SAFE, SAG10, and LPile software, (preferred)

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Microstation and Civil 3D software preferred

  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills

  • Team player with ability to communicate with clients and staff

The ideal candidate will have experience in bridge design and must be experienced in expanding and enhancing project delivery assignments which can include highway bridges, freight and passenger rail structures, and other miscellaneous structural assignments. The successful candidate will be a technically focused individual who is anticipated to be highly engaged in project activity. Proven leadership ability and significant experience and demonstrated technical excellence in planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of structural engineering is required. This individual is tasked with mentoring and developing structural staff locally and participating in the advancement of TranSystems' structural practice in other areas of the country. General Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. * Responsible for overall supervision and quality of those projects which are assigned to their team. * Assures that the project conforms to the contractual agreement the firm has made to the client. * Assures that the project is completed within the allocated period of time and within the budget that has been assigned. * Controls project plan by approving design, specifications, plans, and schedules changes. * Responsible for client satisfaction. * Assist the Managing Director and Client Service Leaders in the implementation of the marketing plan and business development goals established for the area. * Serves as a technical specialist for the organization in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles and processes for an assigned area of responsibility. * Some field work, including condition assessments or construction observation may be required. * Keeps abreast of new scientific methods and developments affecting the organization for the purposes of recommending changes in emphasis of programs or new programs warranted by such developments. * Provide team leadership or mentorship. May plan, organize, support or supervise the work of a staff of engineers and technicians. * With Team Leader, responsible for finding work for team members in order for team to meet utilization goals. * Assess and support progress of the staff and results obtained and recommend changes to achieve overall objectives. * Maintains project staff job results by planning, monitoring, and appraising job results. * Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. * Relays company goals and direction to team members. * Primary contact for employee technical issues. * Initiates and maintains extensive contacts with key people to other organizations. Supervisory Responsibilities - May have supervisory responsibilities if a Group Leader or Team Leader.
