The Community Partnership Coordinator will be responsible for strengthening the Healthy Huntingdon Partnership through the Force for Health (FfH) initiative at J.C. Blair Hospital to improve health literacy in the community.
The VISTA will work to build the capacity of the partnership between J.C. Blair, Juniata College, and the community with a specific focus on the "Club" component of the initiative. FfH Clubs, made up of local residents, work together to define an issue of concern, phrase it into a community defined research question, design a program/activity to address the issue, and assess the outcome.
The projects may be small or large in scale, but are all hyperlocal in terms of the problems being addressed and outcomes assessed, with the ultimate goal of increasing health literacy on the individual and community levels. Improving health literacy helps to alleviate poverty, as those who lack knowledge in this area, disproportionately those living in poverty, often lack knowledge that prevents them from understanding how to address lifestyle factors that lead to poor health. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
