JROTC Army Non-Senior Military Instructor

This is a 10 month position

In addition to Sweetwater County School District 1 process, applicants must have a Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) Defense Self Service Logon (DS-Logon) "Basic account" to use JQUIP. Those personnel, who do not have an account, may register to obtain one on the JQUIP login page. The instructions for a new applicant requiring a DMDC DS-Logon account are on the web site pages. Applicants will also be required to complete an application, online training, and interview from cadet command.

Nature and Scope of Job:

The purpose of a teacher's job is to teach students to read, write, problem solve, compute, how to find information, how to think, how to work cooperatively with others, and to meet all district-required curriculum objectives.

Job Functions:

Essential Functions:

  • Plans and implements a program of study that meets individual needs, interests, and abilities within the Sweetwater County School District Number One.

  • Instructors share teaching responsibilities and work as a team. Instructors should teach by expertise and preference in subject areas rather than by Leadership Education and Training (LET) levels. The AI is responsible for teaching JROTC curriculum.

  • Uses effective teaching techniques and materials to implement curriculum objectives and goals.

  • Writes weekly lesson plans describing daily learning experiences correlated to curriculum objectives.

  • Monitors and assesses student progress and provides feedback on a regular basis to students and parents/guardians.

  • Diagnoses, instructs, and evaluates specific students' needs and seeks assistance of specialists as needed.

  • Communicates aims/objectives to students in a well-planned, organized manner in clear, concise terms.

  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to maturity of the students.

  • Assists administration in implementing all policies, regulations, and rules of Sweetwater County School District Number One.

  • Creates educational experiences to provide students with opportunities to develop potential in self-esteem, personal-social adjustment, decision making, and other life skills.

  • Promotes and follows adopted Sweetwater County School District Number One philosophy, policies, and administrative procedures.

  • Communicates concerns and ideas with colleagues, parents, students and community in a positive manner.

  • Assumes legal responsibilities for supervision of students on school property or in attendance at school-sponsored activities.

  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

  • Assumes individual responsibilities assigned by the principal/supervisor which may relate to committee work, student activities, student supervision, or other planning and professional assignments.

  • Maintains accurate, complete, legible, and correct records as required by law, Sweetwater County School District Number One policy, and administrative regulation.

  • Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, material, and facilities.

  • Conducts oneself in a business-like and task-oriented manner.

  • Strives to be a good employee as well as an effective teacher.

  • Maintains equipment and lab materials in a safe and orderly fashion.

JROTC Army §2033. Instructor qualifications:

(a) In General.-In order for a retired officer or noncommissioned officer to be employed as an instructor in the program, the officer must be certified by the Secretary of the military department concerned as a qualified instructor in leadership, wellness and fitness, civics, and other courses related to the content of the program, according to the qualifications set forth in subsection (b)(2) or (c)(2), as appropriate.

(b) (c) Non-Senior Military Instructors.-

(1) Role.-Non-senior military instructors shall be retired noncommissioned officers of the armed forces and shall serve as instructional leaders and teach independently of, but share program responsibilities with, senior military instructors.

(2) Qualifications.-A non-senior military instructor shall demonstrate a depth of experience, proficiency, and expertise in coaching, mentoring, and practical arts in executing the program, and shall have the following qualifications:

(A) Professional military qualification, as determined by the Secretary of the military department concerned.

(B) Award of an associate's degree from an institution of higher learning within five years of employment.

(C) Completion of secondary education teaching certification requirements for the program as established by the Secretary of the military department concerned.

(D) Award of an advanced certification by the Secretary of the military department concerned in core content areas based on-

(i) accumulated points for professional activities, services to the profession, awards, and recognitions;

(ii) professional development to meet content knowledge and instructional skills; and

(iii) performance evaluation of competencies and standards within the program through site visits and inspections.

Other Functions:

1.Attends and supervises curriculum oriented field trips.

2.Attends parent and staff meetings.

3.Keeps informed by reading current information related to profession.

4.Responds to requests for information in a timely manner.

In addition to teaching in the classroom there are a number of activities that will require JROTC instructors to work outside of the regular school hours. An instructors work week could easily exceed 50 hours and may include additional weekend activities.

Job Qualifications:

  • Noncommissioned Officers who have separated/retired within the past 5 years with a minimum of 10 years cumulative honorable service in the grades of E-6 through E-9.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Mental Ability:

  • Possess a broad specific knowledge with expertise in areas of certification.

  • Possess a group dynamics and interpersonal skills.

  • Possess knowledge of psychological, emotional, and educational behavioral development of children

  • Possess classroom management skills which include discipline as well as record keeping and assessment ability.

  • Possess technological and computer skills.

  • Possess problem solving, imagination, patience, reasoning, creativity, judgment, and analytical abilities.

  • Education, License, Certification or Formal Training:

  • Possess all certificates required for the State of Wyoming.

  • Continue to pursue graduate level classes for professional growth.

  • Manage and conduct the JROTC unit according to Cadet Command guidance and school rules, regulations and policies.

  • The AI will assist the SAI in advising school authorities on policy and regulation changes.

  • Maintain good relations with school authorities, faculty and the student body.

  • Maintain contact with parents of all cadets experiencing academic or behavioral problems.

  • Assist the SAI so the JROTC unit areas are neat and orderly; current chain of command photos is posted; cadet creed, core abilities and mission statement are present; and all sensitive items are secured and are inventoried regularly.

Physical Demands:

Be able to stand, walk, and sit for long periods without fatigue or discomfort.

Be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Be able to push up to 200 pounds up to 30 feet.

Be able to pull up to 100 pounds up to 50 feet. Be able to carry up to 25 pounds up to 100 feet.

Be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, finger, talk, hear, and see

Environmental Demands:

Be able to spend most of the time inside classrooms with some work outside in cold/hot weather.

Be able to tolerate noise up to 90 decibels.

Just as any other teacher, JROTC Instructors will be required to perform additional duties as required by the school. Additional duties may include hall monitor, chaperone, event security, test proctor, cafeteria duty, substitute teach other classes, etc.
