Duties

Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

  • Assist the Principal in supervising the operation of the assigned attendance center.

  • Assist the Principal in performing administrative responsibilities and instructional leadership under the supervision of the Superintendent for the planning, operation, and evaluation of the educational program of the assigned attendance area.

  • Utilize resources of proper law enforcement agencies when the safety and welfare of students and teachers are threatened by illegal use of drugs and alcohol, by illegal use or possession of weapons, or by illegal gang activity.

  • Implement the District's philosophy of education and mission and values and instructional goals and objectives.

  • Plan a program of study that improves instruction and meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.

  • Adequately prepare for daily leadership of building needs.

  • Report suspected child abuse/neglect cases as required by statute and board policy and notify immediately appropriate personnel of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids.

  • Work cooperatively with other school personnel in the identification, diagnosis, referral, and remediation of individual students with specialized needs.

  • Meet with students, parents, other administrators, and/or consultants as necessary to meet district mission and building vision.

  • Communicate with parents regularly and document processes used to engage parents in the educational program.

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct registers, records and reports as required by law, board policy, or building procedures.

  • Build a shared vision of high expectations leading to college and career readiness.

  • Hold staff accountable for progress towards stated goals and work to build capacity with staff members.

  • Conduct difficult conversations in order to improve student results.

  • Collaborate with the SVHS Activities Director to develop, implement, and monitor outcomes of a Departmental Improvement Plan.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor outcomes of a School Improvement Plan.

  • Comprehensively assess all aspects of department performance through an annual data report.

  • Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.

  • Prioritize use of school time to maximize instructional time in order to achieve school goals.

  • Employ current and developing technologies and promote their use.

  • Implement a defined curricular scope and sequence.

  • Consistently review and assess instructional practices of all teachers in the building.

  • Model and implement a data-driven decision-making structure.

  • Comprehensively assess all aspects of department performance through an annual data report.

  • Disaggregate data to determine how the school is performing at serving those students traditionally under-served.

  • Select, assign, and retain effective teachers.

  • Oversee an effective and equitable discipline program for both students and teachers in accordance with law, Board Policy, regulations and where applicable the collective bargaining agreement.

  • Frequently observe staff, provide consistent feedback, and evaluate staff consistent with the School Code and collective bargaining agreement.

  • Evaluate all departmental staff annually.

  • Develop a team of instructional leaders to build capacity of all teachers.

  • Assist the Principal in implementing and leading a Professional Learning Community.

  • Build ongoing relationships with students, staff, parents, community, and potential business partners.

  • Make recommendations to the Principal and Superintendent in the appointment, retention, promotion, and assignment of all personnel in the assigned attendance center.

  • Follow appropriate protocols as directed by supervisor for time off requests or time away from building and/or department.

  • Include multiple voices and perspectives in the decision-making process.

  • Engage families in the educational program, including hosting a Parental Advisory Council.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the change process and use leadership and facilitation skills to manage it effectively.

  • Demonstrate personal resolve and the ability to respond effectively to challenges

  • Model equity and dignity by treating all people fairly, equitably, and with respect.

  • Engage in courageous conversations about diversity.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor a student goal setting process.

  • Create a departmental vision to support district mission.

  • Maintain complete and accurate athletic records for all sports.

  • Check and report out eligibility of all athletes to coaches and administration.

  • Plan and arrange for pep rallies and award assemblies.

  • Be responsible for publicity and press releases concerning athletics.

  • Attend all home games, meets, contests, and away games, or appoint a representative to act on behalf of the District.

  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of the IESA rules and regulations.

  • Represent the District at athletic meetings such as Route 72 Conference and IESA meetings.

  • Meet with the Superintendent each year to discuss athletics and activity budget.

  • Based on overall allotment, create a budget each year to cover the required expenditures necessary to conduct the total interscholastic athletic program.

  • Maintain a complete financial record of receipts and expenditures.

  • Submit a requisition for all athletic equipment and supplies.

  • Develop and update a District Athletic Handbook to be approved by the Board of Education annually.

  • Supervise coaching staff.

  • Supervise concessions at athletic events.

  • Promote the athletic program.

  • Approve and coordinate fund raising.

  • Address Title IX Regulations and compliance.

  • Monitor the Athletic Treasurer at the building site.

  • Enforce the Board of Education approved policies regarding athletics.

  • Keep an inventory of all athletic equipment and supplies.

  • Be responsible for the care, maintenance, and storage of all athletic equipment.

  • Arrange for all athletes to have medical examinations.

  • Recommend the best qualified teacher for coaching positions, if a teacher is available.

  • Maintain and submit a coaches end of season report to the Building Principal, which will include:

  • Individual participation summaries.

  • Recommendations for next season.

  • Annual inventory at the end of the season and prior to ordering for the next season.

  • Budget requests from each coach.

  • Eligibility lists - kept up-to-date for all individual and team participants.

  • Coaches evaluation

  • Post available coaching positions, in consultation with the Superintendent and HR Director.

  • Provide in-service training for coaches.

  • Create a Coaches' Hiring Committee.

  • Arrange transportation for all athletic teams.

  • Contract officials for all home games in accordance with District procedure and Board policy. Maintain a written contract with each official assigned to work at the school for an athletic event.

  • Provide for the proper administration and supervision of all athletic contests, including:

  • Selling and taking of tickets.

  • Arranging for sufficient police/security coverage.

  • Arranging for medical and ambulance coverage.

  • Providing seating facilities for teams and spectators.

  • Providing necessary facilities for the visiting team.

  • Providing the necessary game equipment.

  • Setting up the facility for game time.

  • Arrange for pre-game and half-time programs at athletic events.

  • Regularly inspect all department facilities and grounds to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.

  • Serve as a role model for students, dressing professionally, demonstrating good sportsmanship, the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and pride in the education profession.

  • Keep the staff informed and seek ideas for the improvement of the department. Conduct meetings to ensure the proper functioning of the instructional and athletic programs.

  • Communicate with the Superintendent and with the principals regularly about the needs, successes, and general operation of the athletic programs. Recommend policies and procedures to promote a healthy and supportive climate for athletics.

  • Follow procedures for safe storing and integrity of all public and confidential school records, ensuring that personnel and student record keeping procedures comply with State and federal law and Board policy.

  • Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.

  • Summarize, interpret, and disseminate current developments in comprehensive health education, physical education, athletics, and student activities through reading of professional journals, participation in professional development, and involvement in professional organizations.

  • Observe strictly, to avoid the appearance of conflict, all requirements of the IESA, Illinois School Code, and Board policies regarding conflicts of interest in employment, purchasing, and other decisions, including solicitation and acceptance of gifts and favors, and submit in a timely fashion the required annual disclosure statement regarding employment and financial interests.

  • Assist the Principal in the development of a student and staff code of conduct.

  • Build capacity of adults to implement a formal social-emotional learning curriculum.

  • Run weekly academic eligibility and meet with students and parents.

  • Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties in accordance with the law and Board policies.

  • Supervise and lead (or ensure that the event is supervised or led) appropriate after-school activities including, but not limited to:

  • Parent nights

  • Parent Teacher Conferences

  • Plays and Musicals

  • Athletic Events

  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to contractual obligations and the law and regulations, including but not limited to, the Illinois School Code, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and regulations, school regulations and procedures, all federal and state laws and rules as they relate to athletics, and contractual obligations, where applicable.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Valid and properly registered Professional Educator License and applicable endorsement(s), issued by the Illinois State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board, qualifying him or her to act as Assistant Principal in the district

  • Evidence of physical fitness and freedom from communicable disease

  • Successful completion of criminal background check

Salary/Benefits

In accordance with the current Board of Education and Stillman Valley Education Association contract.

Additional Notes

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to the weight of a student. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Other physical demands of the position include: regular bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting/turning/balancing, reaching above shoulder/outward, and typing/keyboarding. Rarely, will the administrator be called on to intervene in a physical altercation in order to best ensure student safety.

In the work environment, the employee is regularly exposed to video display and regularly works in typical interior/office environmental conditions. The employee is expected to work on nights and weekends if necessary to accomplish the goals of the position. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
