Job Summary

Assembles, installs and repairs plumbing systems according to specifications and appropriate trade and building codes. These systems may consist of pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems.

Essential Duties

  • Studies specifications, building plans and shop drawings to determine tools and equipment required and the appropriate sequence of installation. Follows hanger spacing and load requirements based on specs and owner requirements.

  • Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, bathtubs, urinals, water heaters, water softeners and others.

  • Locates and marks the position of pipe, pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors using ruler, level and laser.

  • Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and fittings, using hand and power tools.

  • Installs sleeves and leave outs for roof and wall penetrations.

  • Digs, backfills and tamps ditches using shovels, picks, and tampers.

  • Cuts, reams and solders copper tubing/piping, braze, solvent weld, fuse groove and thread pipe using pipe cutters, reamers, torches, allow gaskets, solvent cements, fusing machines, press fittings, grove and pipe-threading machines.

  • Assembles and installs valves, pipes and fittings composed of metals, i.e. iron, steel, copper, brass, lead and non-metals, i.e. glass, vitrified clay and plastic using hand tools and power tools.

  • Joins pipe using mechanical solder, brazing and pipe joining methods.

  • Fills pipe systems with water or air and reads gauges to determine system leaks.

  • Maintains the work area in a clean orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations (should support implementation of 6S). Maintains required personal tools, and properly uses all Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and safety equipment.

Minimum Requirements

High School Diploma or GED Required

Valid/current Journeyman Plumber's License is required.

4+ years as a Plumbing Journeyman preferred

Trained and qualified to operate machinery such as scissor lifts, aerial lifts, fork lifts, etc.

Requires proficiency through job-related training and considerable on-the-job experience. May act as an informal resource for colleagues with less experience. Completes work with a limited degree of supervision and regularly provides guidance to others.

Installs new and repairs existing systems, develops and maintains preventive maintenance schedules and performs specialized tests. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the first in a series of two plumber-related job classifications within the Skilled Trades job family.This classification is distinguished by the requirement for a journey plumber license, additional experience and the ability to perform skilled journeyman level of plumbing work.This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department. Duties and Responsibilities * Installs new and repairs plumbing systems. Makes recommendations regarding replacement or upgrade of systems. * Plans and develops routine preventive maintenance schedules for systems. Responds to requests for service. * Researches and estimates time and materials needed and records time and materials used. Requests for needed tools, equipment, supplies and materials to perform assigned tasks. Monitors expenditure of supplies and controls inventory of equipment and tools. * Installs new equipment, piping and fixtures. Obtains permits, as required, from regulatory agencies for the construction of new plumbing systems. * Performs preventive maintenance and required testing on plumbing systems, including back flow preventers. * Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements Education and Experience: High School diploma or G.E.D. AND four (4) years experience in the installation and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems, such as gas, water and steam systems; OR, Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job. Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements: Journeyman Plumber License issued by the State of Texas. Valid Texas Driver's License. Applicants are required to successfully pass the background investigation, including fingerprint clearance Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of: * Plumbing codes, related terminology, practices and procedures. * Standard plumbing maintenance and repair methods, materials, tools and equipment. * Computer equipment to include word processing, spreadsheets, databases and a variety of software packages. * Business letter writing, grammar and punctuation, and report preparation.
