Summary of Position: The English Language Arts Specialist is responsible for the oversight and support of the ELA program for grades 5-8. Primary responsibilities include design and implementation of the district curriculum; articulating and monitoring the delivery of the ELA program within each grade; working closely with teachers to ensure that they teach ELA effectively, according to the curriculum and standards adopted for the Easton School District; participation in the SRBI process, including implementation of intervention. In addition, he/she must be a skilled observer of children, capable of conducting informal as well as formal assessment of children in ELA. Coaching and professional growth of staff are primary role responsibilities as is communicating with parents and the greater community. The ELA Specialist works closely with building administrators and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction.

Date Available: Commencing with the start of the 2019-2020 school year. Start date will be August 26, 2019.

Salary & Benefits: In accordance with Redding Education Association's bargaining unit contract. Full benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates and maintains expertise in domains of curriculum, instruction, and assessment with respect to state, national and international trends and research

  • Sets annual goals for the improvement of ELA instruction in consultation with building principals and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction

  • Leads and supports classroom teachers, special educators and paraeducators in the implementation and delivery of curriculum

  • Works with principal and Assistant Superintendent in scheduling and leading grade level and department meetings to ensure horizontal and vertical continuity of the ELA program

  • Collaborates with literacy leader counterparts across buildings and levels to monitor and assure curriculum articulation across the tri-district

  • Interprets curriculum and proposed curriculum changes to the Board, the administration, the staff and the parent community

  • Works to integrate literacy instruction across all disciplines

  • Plans and collaboratively facilitates data analysis work

  • Leads the evaluation of instructional methods, programs, technology and materials, and recommends such changes and improvements as needed

  • Reviews, analyzes, interprets and evaluates standardized assessment results and any other district-wide testing and assessment program

  • Participates in the oversight of and ongoing revision of the master assessment plan

  • Coaching: Observes classes and models lessons for teachers, providing feedback to teachers based on these interactions

  • Assists teachers and school leadership in differentiating instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students

Ideal Candidate Possesses:

  • Appropriate CT teaching certification in 102, Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts and/or 092 Intermediate Administrator and 097, Reading and Language Arts Consultancy

  • Strong knowledge base in reading and writing; well-versed in current educational research

  • Excellent coaching and communications skills

  • Strong understanding of the developmental needs of young adolescents

  • Experience in student assessment and program design

  • Motivation to meet the diverse needs of middle school learners

  • Enthusiasm for teaching and learning
