The University of Virginia Center for Applied Biomechanics, located in Charlottesville, Virginia, seeks a Laboratory Specialist Senior. Responsible for operation of a specialized research area or laboratory with one or more faculty members within a department.

Operates with considerable latitude in unreviewed actions or decisions. May act as liaison with other departments, divisions or organizations. Develops, designs and conducts one or more small or moderately complex research projects or experiments in line with plan, reviews progress and evaluates results.

Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques. Develops protocol and criteria; determines interview procedures and approves protocols; may also design intervention protocols. Trains users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes.

Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies the data. Conducts analysis of data, interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis. Co-authors publications and may co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or conferences.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education Requirements:

  • Requires a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

Other Requirements:

  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience in model development for crash occupant injury prediction in MADYMO.

  • Some experience in modeling heavy trucks and heavy truck crashes; a minimum of six (6) months' work experience in developing multibody models of anthropomorphic test devices using the Madymo software.

  • Minimum of six (6) months work experience in vehicle crash restraint development and testing.

  • Less than 10% travel required for conferences.

Lab Specialist employees provide technical lab support by performing complex lab and research related tasks. They act as specialists on research methods and equipment functions specific to investigations. They have the authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet the needs of research. They are distinguished from Lab Technicians by the types and duration of assignments, as well as the skills and expertise necessary to serve as resources on non-routine problems. Lab Specialist employees perform daily activities without supervision; their longer-term assignments require greater oversight. Lab Specialist employees often train others on work processes and policies. This is a restricted position contingent upon the continuation of funding. Demonstrate expertise in troubleshooting problems and recommending solutions. Perform a variety of tests requiring high degree of proficiency. * Assist in evaluation of research methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives. * Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software. Evaluate experiment results using statistical and multivariate analyses. Research, compile, and maintain complex statistical, numerical, and computerized reports. * Perform library and literature research. * Assist in training other staff members on procedures. * In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Bachelor's degree by start date Experience: At least three years of experience, which may include experience gained while a student. Licensure: None. * REQUIRED: General lab reagent generation and upkeep (e.g., how to make buffered solutions, liquid media preparation, autoclave usage, sterile technique, practical knowledge/experience working with aqueous and organic liquids, inventory management). * REQUIRED: Experience with running SDS-PAGE and Western Blot Analysis. * REQUIRED: Molecular biology (PCR, design and execution of cloning experiments, interpretation of Sanger Sequencing results). * REQUIRED: Practical experience in protein purification and chromatography. * RECOMMENDED: Working knowledge of GE Akta and/or Bio-Rad NGC purification platforms. * RECOMMENDED: Experience with cell growth and harvest (E.coli, yeast, insect, and human/mammalian cells). * RECOMMENDED: Experience with cell lysis/disruption and cell debris clarification. * RECOMMENDED: Experience with biological lipids and formulation of liposomes/proteoliposomes. * RECOMMENDED: Experience with activity assays and steady state kinetics experiments. PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
