Summary:

The Jail Deputy is responsible for the daily operation of the Jail. Insuring safety and security of the facility and the inmates.

The Jail Deputy may also act in a trainer/instructor role. The Jail Deputy may may be tasked with basic supervisory duties in the absence of the Corporal or Sergeant. or as a supervisor in the absence or direction of the Shift Sergeant.

Essential Duties:

  • Intake of a prisoner
  • Collect all personal property, complete paperwork and log in the computer, and secure items properly in property room. Make sure proper paper work is obtained from the arresting agency.

    Dress out prisoner in stripes and give indigents (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, boxer, T-shirt, etc..) Take photos and fingerprints. When releasing an inmate dress them out in personal clothes and return all personal items from property room.
  • Pre-Booking
  • Enter the prisoner into the computer system, assign a number (it they don't have one) and complete medical questionnaire. Enter the prisoner into the permanent record book. Insure that prisoner has had a body scan for hidden contraband.
  • Booking
  • Enter all data into the computer such as the personal information (address, employer, next of kin, etc..), the prisoners charges, court date, etc.. Run ACIC/NCIC on all prisoners coming in or out of the jail. Make sure inmates get their bond hearings and all paperwork is complete and entered into the computer.

    OCA files are current and up to date at all times. Release inmates in computer and make sure all paperwork is completed and signed to send to warrants.
  • Central Control
  • Control doors coming in and out of facility.

    Monitor Deputy and Inmate movement inside and the outer perimeter at all times of the facility.

    Maintain visual security on activities such as visitation, church, med call and any movement in hallways. Monitor all traffic coming and leaving through outside security gates ensuring safety and security of the Jail.
  • Pods
  • Supervision of inmates, searching of inmates coming and going from pods, and logging all activities into the computer such as recreation, court, church, visitation, med call, etc.. Dispensing of indigent supplies (toothpaste, shampoo, soap, pencil, paper, etc..) to inmates. Picking up and exchanging whites and stripes on scheduled days.

    Handing out and picking up food trays at mealtime. Make hourly checks on cells and keep a head count on the inmates Answer questions an inmate has on his/her charges, court date, court proceedings, etc.. Supervise inmates during Nurse call. Mediating arguments and breaking up any fights that may break out. Controlling violent or mentally disturbed inmates from harm of themselves or another inmate.
  • Work Detail: Transport and supervise inmates selected for work detail.

    Insure the safety of both the inmate and the public. Document inmate hours worked and prepare reports after project completion. Communicate with various public agencies to define projects and issues that may arise during the project.

  • Medical Deputy: Will ensure the safety of the nursing staff while they perform medical screenings and examinations within the facility.

    The medical deputy will escort nurses for medication pass and/or medical situations that arise in the detention center. This deputy is responsible for escorting inmates to and from doctor visits or other medical exams in the facility.

  • Classification Deputy: Will be responsible for classifying all inmates booked into the facility.

    These deputies will classify each inmate based on charges, past and present as well as any previous incident reports in the inmate's history. The levels for classification on an inmate will be High, Medium or Low. Each inmate will be housed according to their classification. These deputies will also be responsible for investigating all disciplinary action reports filed on inmates, determining outcomes of the reports and documenting findings.

  • Power Booker: Communicates with all courts and attorneys/public defenders, to coordinate inmate paperwork or other needs.

    They are responsible for scheduling and facilitating attorney visits and video court proceedings. Facilitates video court proceedings and completes court information sheets. Assist with booking in new inmates and releasing of inmates. Assist with all other booking operations.

  • Flex Deputy: Performs all previous listed essential duties of Jail Deputy.

    Will be responsible for providing assistance completing tasks throughout the facility as needed to increase the efficiency of detention center operations. This deputy is available to work flexible hours determined by detention center command staff. Other duties as assigned.

  • 287G (ICE) Deputy- This deputy will work directly with Immigration Custom Enforcement. They will be responsible for interviewing all foreign nationals charged with a felony booked into the detention facility.

    Will place a detainer on those persons that meet the criteria established by ICE for such a hold. ICE will communicate with deputy should the inmate be held on federal charges.

  • Front Desk Administrative: Responsible for security of the front lobby area and face of the organization meeting the public.

    Answers multiple phone lines and provides information or direction to public inquiries. Informs the public who arrive in person of inmate visitation, bond questions, or other detention related questions. Collects fees and cash bonds Sorts incoming and outgoing legal mail for inmates.

    Responsible for AFIS fingerprinting. Also performs other jail deputy duties as required. Facilitates bondsman and attorney visits as well as provides information for video visitation of inmates to family and the public.

  • Trainer/Instructor- May act as trainer/instructor to new Jail Deputy trainees upon completion of CLEST certified Jail Training Officer course.

  • Acting Supervisor- May act as the Shift Corporal or Shift Sergeant in their absence as well as take on Supervisory roles given to them by the Shift Corporal or Shift Sergeant. This may include conducting inmate hearings, participating in employee disciplinary counseling, uniform and weapons inspection or several other supervisory roles.

Qualifications Requirements

To perform the job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, meet all training requirements and certifications.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

A Jail Deputy will be required to supervise up to three hundred inmates during a shift while working an inmate housing unit.

Jail Deputy may also be directly responsible for those trainees assigned to them. They will provide instruction and direction for new Jail Deputy employees, and report the progress of training of those employees to the Jail Training Sergeant.

Jail Deputy may also act in a supervisory role in the absence of the Shift Corporal or Shift Sergeant or under the direction of the Shift Sergeant. This assignment could cause the Jail Deputy to supervise up to 25 deputies and 700 inmates.

Other Skills and Abilities

Should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as the employee must work with others to implement solutions. Must be able to analyze problems and determine best method for resolution.

Must have a level of physical readiness in which the incumbent could actively physically defend themselves for an extended period of time.

The incumbent will be required to participate in training involving intermediate impact weapons. This training includes, but is not limited to exposure to pepper spray, tear gas, taser, and baton strikes.

Incumbent will also possess the necessary aptitude to train and mentor new Jail Deputy trainees. In addition, for those assigned a supervisory role, the Jail Deputy must possess strong leadership skills and be able to lead and motivate a group of Jail Deputies to accomplish the daily mission in the absence of the Shift Corporal or Shift Sergeant.

Education and Experience:

The Jail Deputy must possess at least a high school diploma or GED. Additional education or training is preferred.

Knowledge of prisoner transportation, court system, basic first aid, CPR, protections from blood borne pathogens. Knowledge of county policy and procedures, applicable local, state, and federal laws. Self-defense and physical constraints procedures are also required.

Must complete a CLEST certified Jail Standards course within 9 months of hire. Jail Deputies must have at least six months of experience working in the Benton County Jail and complete a CLEST certified course as a Jail Training Officer in order to train and mentor new Jail Deputy trainees. All Jail Deputies must complete 16 hours of CLEST approved training annually to maintain Jailer certification.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to talk or hear handle or feel objects/control. The employee must occasionally stand, walk, sit, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl with hands and arms, walk up and down stairs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to or more than 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus. The employee must maintain a level of fitness to physically defend against, subdue and control violent combative inmates. Jail Deputy must be available to work any shift

Work Environment

While performing the duties of the job the employee will regularly encounter violent inmates requiring to be restrained by the employee. The employee will have to defend himself from attack on occasion.

The employee will be in contact with inmates with communicable diseases from time to time. The employee will have to settle disputes between inmates using interpersonal skills. The employee will regularly be in situations where the exposure to bodily fluids, blood borne pathogens or other biohazards is possible. If assigned to work detail, the employee will be exposed to outside working conditions including rain, heat/cold, dust, and dirt.
