The incumbent serves as a Sustainment Manager in the Office of Information and Technology, Enterprise Program Management Office/Transition Release & Support/Health Product Support organization. The VA's Health Product Support organization is responsible for ensuring the successful software sustainment of Class I Veteran's Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) products and other nationally-deployed software applications in VA facilities across the United States.

The work is primarily sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required. This position may require extended hours to meet project deadlines and to devise corrective actions and solutions to unexpected contract issues.
Health Product Support (HPS) is divided into two groups, Tier 2 and Tier 3 Sustainment, each of which provide different levels of software application support. The incumbent serves as a Tier 3 Sustainment Manager with the following primary responsibilities:
(1) Software transition: Sustainment Managers are responsible for assessing newly developed applications to determine whether or not their software sustainment needs can be met by HPS and/or what resources would be needed to accommodate those outside their capabilities.
(2) Defect repair: Sustainment Managers are responsible for addressing and/or resolving any application defect repairs that cannot be fixed by Tier 2 support personnel.
(3) Software application management: Sustainment Managers are responsible for software sustainment of deployed applications by providing budget, acquisition, contract, and technical risk management. They are also responsible for code maintenance, as well as collaborating with Tier 2 and external stakeholders, to ensure the continued success and availability of VA software products.
