A Day in the Life of an IT Infrastructure Engineer:
The IT Infrastructure Engineer plays a crucial role in advancing the comprehensive spectrum of operational functions within the framework of the W. M. Keck Observatory's (WMKO) objectives, mission, vision, and values. Reporting to the Computer and Network Systems Manager, the position operates autonomously, aligning decisions with legal requirements and organizational policies. Often operating with a sense of urgency, the IT Infrastructure Engineer performs essential tasks in the development, implementation, and support of the organizational systems infrastructure.
The principal activities of this role encompass optimization of the IT infrastructure, designing solutions to support continued operations, maintaining network systems, and resolving IT issues. This role routinely works at the summit to support a mentality of "safely on sky every night." The ideal candidate will be able to handle diverse tasks and have a passion for learning new technologies.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Required Qualifications:
Associate degree in Information Technology or a related technical field and a minimum of 5 years related technical experience. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
At least 5 years managing enterprise firewalls, including a working knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and architectures (OSI-model, TCP/IP, major application protocols such as DNS/HTTP/SMTP, LAN/WANs, VPNs, routers/routing, addressing, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Palo Alto firewalls
Experience with ManageEngine Products Op Manager, Endpoint Central, ServiceDesk Plus, Password Manager Pro
Proficient in Linux and Windows Server OS Administration
Experience implementing VPN
Experience with HP routers and switches
Experience with VMware or other virtualization technologies
Experience with Microsoft 365 or other cloud-based technologies
Experience with Nimble or other SAN technologies
Experience with enterprise backup solutions
Working knowledge of security concepts, protocols, processes, architectures, and tools
Security and Technical Certifications: SSCP, Security+, GSEC, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP) and/or other related Cybersecurity certifications
