General Description and Classification Standards
Designs, develops, maintains, evaluates, and troubleshoots current network hardware and software; evaluates their ability to support specific requirements and interface with other equipment and systems for the Department of Watershed Management (DWM). Directly participates in the planning of large-scale systems and projects for DWM. Designs, implements, troubleshoots and maintains a complex datacenter environment that incorporates diverse equipment and technologies including (but not limited to) LAN, WAN, Ethernet, TCP/IP, T1, Metro Ethernet, ASE, MPLS, VPN, Cisco USC, VMWare, F5, VoIP, WiFi, and 4G LTE for DWM.
Works under minimal supervision. May assist in training, orienting, or observing lower level associate, apprentice, or semi-skilled employee in the group.

Serves as the lead network engineer, technical architect/design expert and implementation expert for networking components in an integrated enterprise LAN/WAN environment.
Directly participates in the design, development and implementation of highly complex and highly-available LAN/WAN systems in accordance with the DWM's goals and objectives.
Provides leadership, guidance, and technical assistance to other Network Engineers.
Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) on projects that have a network infrastructure component.
Collaborates with contractors, vendors, and other internal departments as needed to resolve complex technical issues
Works within established change management policies to ensure awareness, approval, and success of changes made to the network infrastructure
Maintains and updates technical skills by participating in educational opportunities such as training/certifications, reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks, and/or participating in professional organizations.
Recommends and documents enhancements to existing networking systems and infrastructure.
Provides high level production support as the tier 2/3 escalation point of contact.
Configures, maintains, and upgrades various networking components.
Racks, wires, and mounts networking components as needed.
Documents networking environment using industry standard tools (Visio, etc.).
Provides after hours production support on a rotational basis.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field.
8 years of progressively responsible technical experience.
Must have proven hands-on experience with Nexus family switches/NX-OS, Cisco UCS platform, IP sub-netting, switching, routing, QOS, interior and exterior routing protocols. Solid experience required with major networking vendor hardware such as Cisco, Nortel, 3Com or Bay Networks, along with network management software experience.
Must be able to manage tasks for multiple high-profile projects simultaneously. Must have experience in writing reports and procedural manuals along with presenting information to managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Excellent communications skills required.
Directly related experience may substitute for a degree on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications - Education & Experience
Networking protocols (e.g., EIGRP, HSRP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS) required
Solid understanding of the OSI or TCP/IP model required
Cisco UCS architecture required
Cisco Nexus platform required
Cisco routers and switches - required
F5 load balancing preferred
Cisco wireless LAN technologies preferred
Network Management Software (Solarwinds) preferred
Remote access VPN (Aventail and/or Cisco) preferred
