The IBM iSeries Engineer is responsible for the overall administration, maintenance, and support of the organization's IBM iSeries (AS/400) systems and related software applications. This role ensures the smooth operation, performance, and security of the IBM i environment globally, which is critical to the company's business operations. The successful candidate should also be sufficiently fluent with Linux and Windows to participate more broadly in the engineering team's objectives.

Essential Job Results

1.System Administration:

  • Perform daily system administration tasks, including system monitoring, backup and recovery operations, and performance tuning.

  • Manage user accounts, security settings, and access controls to ensure data integrity and compliance with organizational policies.

  • Install, configure, and maintain IBM i operating system versions, program temporary fixes (PTFs), and related software updates.

  • Complete operational requests via service ticketing system for iSeries and other system engineering platforms.

2.Application Support:

  • Provide technical support for IBM i-based applications, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating with application vendors or developers as needed.

  • Assist in the deployment, testing, and maintenance of new or updated applications on the IBM i platform.

  • Monitor application performance and implement optimization strategies to ensure efficient resource utilization.

3.System Integration and Automation:

  • Develop and maintain scripts, programs, and job schedules to automate routine tasks and improve operational efficiency.

  • Integrate the IBM i systems with other platforms, databases, and applications within the organization's IT infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and data exchange between systems.

4.Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity:

  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans and procedures for the IBM i environment.

  • Perform regular system backups and test restoration procedures to ensure data recoverability.

  • Coordinate with other IT teams to ensure business continuity and minimize downtime during system outages or disasters.

  • Participate in Skechers Disaster Recovery protocol. Identify and configure appropriate data replication requirements in a cloud based VMWare VLF architecture.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Advance configuration management process.

  • Document system configurations, procedures, and processes for future reference and knowledge sharing.

  • Provide training and knowledge transfer to other team members or users on IBM I systems administration and related tasks.

  • Participate in cross functional projects as needed.

  • Monitor infrastructure and respond to service interruptions, performance degradations, or other adverse events.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None, but successful candidate should be able to take lead on designated projects

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with IT security and compliance practices and requirements.

  • Strong knowledge of IBM i operating system, system administration tools, and related software applications.

  • Experience with Power HA and Power VM configuration.

  • Understanding of associated storage technologies - IBM FS5200, Flashcopy.

  • Familiarity with programming languages such as RPG, CL, and SQL. Understanding of system security principles, backup and recovery strategies, and performance tuning techniques.

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.

  • Strong communication and documentation skills.

  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Certifications such as IBM Certified System Administrator or IBM Certified Associate System Administrator for IBM i are preferred but not mandatory.

  • Familiarity with Linux and Windows server operating systems as a member of the global infrastructure engineering team.

  • Grasp of virtualization technologies and related concepts, such as: traditional compute and storage virtualization, HCI-VxRail, IaaS, orchestration and automation, and resource planning.

  • Experience working in cloud and hybrid-cloud environments.

  • Familiarity with Ansible and PowerShell preferred.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • Proven experience as an IBM i Series (AS/400) Administrator, with 3-5 years of hands-on experience.

The salary range for this position is $90,000-$135,000 USD per year.
