Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Responsible for setting up interventional radiology (IR) rooms specific to the study being conducted. Utilizes customer service skills while interacting with patients as well as family members to create a caring atmosphere during their visit.

Career Ladder: There are three bands which are differentiated by level of independence, supervision required, certification, ability to precept new employees in the use of all equipment, and the ability to lead and meet established departmental goals.

Band One (I): Non-Certified IR Technologist

  • Technologists new to the IR Department who require training as well as regular direct supervision and guidance from a more senior technologist. This generally involves orientation to the Departments infrastructure, policies, protocols, workflows, procedures and routines.

    During this period the Technologists must demonstrate an ability to progress towards proficient and competent performance with regards to interventional procedures, fluoroscopy room equipment, digital subtraction, inventory, power injections and post processing tools. Required to complete in a timely manner all associated paper and computer work for discharging with appropriate post procedure instructions.

Band Two (II): Certified IR Technologist

  • With minimal supervision is responsible for setting up for all interventional procedures in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated paper and computer work. Additional duties may include work on special projects such as new equipment evaluations, resource manuals, assisting in the design of areas where clinical equipment will be installed, or assignment to departmental committees.

    Band Two requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience as an IR specialist in a clinical or hospital environment with at least 6 months dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department, certification in Vascular Interventional Radiology, and capable of performing all IR competencies including but not limited to: TIPS, Angiography, Ablations, Pediatrics, Neuro IR, CT Guided Procedures.

Band Three (III): Advanced IR Technologist

  • Independently is responsible for preparing for all IR procedures and handling patients in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated paper and computer work, and discharging the patient from the IR department with appropriate post IR instructions. In addition to the requirements of a Band Two Certified IR Technologist, a Band Three Technologist will be responsible for performing the duty as primary preceptor for new employees and students.

    A Band Three technologist is considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and acts as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Band Three Technologists will be proficient in and rotating through all areas of IR (Neuro, CT, IR) independently. Flexibility with room rotations shifts.

    Responsible for troubleshooting day to day operations, equipment malfunction, knowledgeable about inventory/products and their uses. Band Three Technologists will also have demonstrated the ability to rotate through the Tech of the Day (TOD) role where they will be responsible for coordinating Technologist duty assignments, be the single point of contact for Technologists questions or concerns, collaboratively work with the Nurse of the Day (NOD) and Doctor of the Day (DOD) to ensure cohesion amongst the three disciplines. Select Band Three Technologists may be designated as Leads to support operations on various shifts.

    Leads may either assist their shift supervisor, or in the absence of a supervisor, determine workflow and staff schedule/assignments. Leads may also provide performance evaluation input to the section supervisor. Band Three requires a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as an IR specialist in a clinical or hospital environment with 1 year dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department preferred.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares room and patient specific to the exam to be performed.

  • Arranges equipment, trays, supplies, position patients, and determine proper exposure factors in order to produce a high quality image.

  • Utilizes electronic patient information systems to verify patient name, date, appropriate exam, and any special exam specific comments from the provider. Understands and practices the Dual patient identifier procedure.

  • Observes each patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to meet his or her age-specific needs.

  • Utilizes electronic patient information systems to verify patient name, date, appropriate exam, and any special exam specific comments from the provider.

  • Transfers patients to and from imaging tables using assistive devices such as ARJO lift, transferboards, hover mats.

  • Completes and bills for studies accurately.

  • Maintains accurate patient record keeping by properly identifying images and assuring images are sent to the PACS system correctly.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

One year experience as a Radiologic Technologist preferred. Completion of formal training in an approved School of Radiologic Technology required. Maintains current NYS licensure and ARRT certification with CE credits as required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 28.75 - $ 37.38 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
