Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Investigation Specialist II, Supervisor, the Investigation Specialist I, a sworn peace officer, is assigned to FTB's Criminal Investigation Bureau and conducts investigations of suspected criminal violations of the California Revenue and Taxation Code and appropriate sections of the California Penal Code. The Investigation Specialist I (IS I) will be assigned the less complex and sensitive investigations. The IS I is expected to develop case leads, effectively plan and conduct criminal investigations, direct or participate in enforcement activities and tactical operations, and assist with specialized projects with input and oversight from supervision. The criminal investigations may involve asset concealment, tax evasion and tax fraud. Specific duties include gathering, researching and evaluating facts; collecting and preserving evidence; examining records; preparing search warrants, investigative reports and arrest affidavits; participating in tactical operations, including search warrants and arrest warrants; interviewing suspects and witnesses; testifying as an expert witness at preliminary hearing, trials and other court proceedings.

Investigation Specialists must work unusual hours on short notice and also travel throughout the State, often overnight. Incumbents perform a full range of peace officer duties in accordance with the California Penal Code, Section 830.3. Incumbents must pass a P.O.S.T. certified academy, qualify and carry a firearm and meet all P.O.S.T. and departmental training and education requirements, possess a valid driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Working Conditions

This position requires 3 or more days in the office per week. It is designated office-centered and may be eligible for some remote-working within California based on departmental guidelines and operational need.

Candidates who have applied to take the most recent Investigation Specialist I exam are encouraged to apply.

PLEASE NOTE: Those who are considering lateral transfer will be required to pass the Physical Agility Test, which is pass/fail, before being considered for a position.

To pass this test, candidates must pass every section of the test. Each component must be completed within the specified time limit*. Competitors will be tested on the following components:

1.A Solid Wooden Fence Climb requiring candidates to run 5 yards to a 6 foot wooden fence and climb over the fence within 23 seconds.

2.An Obstacle Course/Agility Run, 99 yards long, consisting of 5-6 sharp turns, 3 6" by 6" by 3' curb height obstacles, and a 34 inch high obstacle that must be vaulted in a period of 38 seconds.

3.A Dummy Drag requiring the candidate to lift and drag a 165 pound dummy 30 feet in 30 seconds.

4.A 500 Yard Run that must be completed within 3 minutes.
