Job Summary:

The special procedures technologist assists the radiologists in the performance of special radiographic examinations including invasive procedures of various anatomical parts and systems to help provide the physician with a summary of findings.

TECHNICAL STANDARDS

Essential Functions: Defined as duties specific to the job, that, if removed, would change the entire purpose of the job; to include the Essential Physical Demands and Essential Working Conditions of this position.

  • Core Essential Functions:

  • Regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance.

  • Collects pertinent data about patient and procedure.

  • Reconfirms the patient's identification and verifies the physician's order.

  • Assures the proper screening protocol is completed.

  • Verifies the patient's pregnancy status when appropriate

  • Documents medical history related to the procedure: patient assessment including cardiovascular and respiratory indicators and status of peripheral pulse when appropriate.

  • Provides information to patient about the procedure

  • Verifies the patient has consented to the procedure and answers any questions the patient may have.

  • Provides accurate explanations and instructions at an appropriate time and at a level the patient can understand.

  • Analyzes the information obtained during the assessment phase and determines optimal imaging parameters per diagnosis.

  • Reviews and reports information to the physician prior to the procedure. Takes appropriate measures including lab values, pre-medication, and patient assessment information.

  • Determines the appropriate imaging modality

  • Determines practice of care such as puncture site, positioning, medical supplies, and immobilization following patient assessment.

  • Administers contrast agents according to established guidelines.

  • Obtains written consent prior to contrast administration.

  • Prepares and sets power injector for contrast administration.

  • Monitors patient during exam for adverse reaction to contrast media.

  • Maintains constant communication with the patient during the procedure.

  • Prepares patient for procedure.

  • Assists and prep patient.

  • Apply immobilization devices and radiation protective shields when applicable.

  • Assists in monitoring the patient pre, peri, and post procedure

  • Starts and maintains IV access and oxygen administration when applicable.

  • Obtains optimum images during scan.

  • Reformats images as needed to better visualize the anatomy or pathology according to established guidelines.

  • Sends images to PACS for interpretation by radiologist

  • Archives images to CD or data storage device as needed.

  • Documents information about patient care, exam, and patient history in appropriate record.

  • Verifies correct order is entered into RIS

  • Documents appropriate patient history into PACS system

  • Documents any exceptions from the established guidelines.

  • Scans appropriate documents into PACS system.

  • Facilitates correspondence with all departments to ensure all procedures are done in a timely manner.

  • Works with department scheduling needs, to accommodate STAT or ASAP orders.

  • Responds to emergency call per department procedures

  • Maintains equipment and work station in optimum condition.

  • Performs daily QC on equipment.

  • Assures adequate patient care and office supplies are maintained.

  • Reports equipment malfunction to service provider.

  • Maintains aseptic work area and practices sterile techniques.

  • Implements downtime procedures when necessary.

  • Coordinates rescheduling of patients during equipment downtime.

  • Initiates established downtime procedures during HIS/RIS and PACS downtime

Ability to perform the Essential Functions on the Physical Conditions chart; and the ability to perform the Essential Functions on the Working Conditions chart (see attached charts)

  • Marginal Functions: Defined as duties that are not essential in nature and do not take a considerable amount of time to complete (less than 10%).

  • Attends department meetings or reviews meeting minutes.

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Required Skills and Knowledge: Minimum level of education, skills and abilities necessary in performing the job.

Education:

  • Completion of a (JRCERT) accredited Radiologic Technology Program

Certification / Licensure / Regulation:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program.

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance

  • Current Registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)

Prior Experience:

  • Twelve months on the job experience to demonstrate knowledge in procedures, anatomy, internal systems, and equipment.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Medical Terminology

  • Functional Skills on PC and Related Software (Microsoft Office)

  • Knowledge of basic Office Equipment such as copier, fax machine, etc.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to work independently and in a team setting; creativity in treatment in various settings including inpatient, skilled nursing and outpatient clinics; ability to transition smoothly between various treatment settings; flexibility in scheduling.

Preferred Factor:

  • Completion of advanced level examination in Cardiovascular-Interventional technology with RTRCV credentialing preferred
