Pay Range/Classification:

  • Position classified LEAF C-3-1
  • $24.49 - $28.95 per hour depending on experience (rates subject to change with the completion of the 2023-2025 LEAF contract)

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the guidance of the special education teacher and the direct supervision of the principal and special education coordinator, the Intervener aids students in meeting their individualized education plan (IEP) goals in areas such as academics, communication, emotional, physical and behavioral. Interveners work with students individually to support communication, mobility, sensory, personal care, and other developmental needs during all activities throughout the school day. The Intervener is a part of a team environment, where collaboration, communication, and adaptability are key to the success of the students and the team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential functions of this position may include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties:

  • Serve in the role of deaf/blind intervener to support learners who are deafblind with language, communication, mobility, sensory, personal care, and other developmental needs through sign language, sign communication paired with spoken English, cued English, and/or other visual supports throughout all activities in the school day.

  • Assist classroom teacher in providing instruction and managing student educational programming.

  • Adapt instructional materials, equipment, or strategies, under the direction of the teacher or other professionals, to provide differentiated instruction, accomplish objectives and meet student needs.

  • Implement charting, data collection, paperwork preparation, and other monitoring techniques to ensure student success in a variety of areas, such as behavioral, social, and educational.

  • Assist licensed staff in the implementation of classroom management and behavioral interventions, creating an environment appropriate for learning.

  • Utilize proactive behavior management techniques, reinforcing positive behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques, and redirecting inappropriate behaviors. May be required to use physical interventions.

  • Assist students in their daily routines, including escorting students during arrival and departure and to classes or therapy, providing supervision in school areas such as lunch, the playground or gym, and at school related activities off site.

  • Facilitate activities with a student under the direction of the teacher, therapist or other related services staff.

  • Help to maintain safety, privacy and confidentiality of the student and the environment. 2

  • Collaborate with related service personnel, teachers, special education paraprofessionals and other program/school staff in order to meet the needs of the student and maintain a positive work environment for all.

  • Participate in training/in-service, district-wide professional development, school conferences and school activities beyond the work day, when requested by the special education teacher and approved by special education administration.

  • When working with Medical Assistance (MA) billable students, complete MA training and daily paperwork associated with the billing process.

  • Facilitate interactions between student with disabilities and classmates.

  • Performs other job-related duties, as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Specific training or job experience required before appointment):

  • Proficiency in spoken English skills and willingness to learn Cued Speech and use Cued English.

  • Experience working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing and visually impaired with additional needs in the educational setting, preferred, with general knowledge of the practices, methods, and techniques used in the teaching of students

  • Ability to serve in a role to support sign language and/or spoken language development of learners with a hearing loss.

  • Ability to serve in the role of intervener for learners who are deaf/blind, and be trained or willing to be trained as a deaf/blind intervener by the MN Deaf/Blind Project, which includes a series of six weekend trainings.

  • Must be highly qualified: Two years of study at an institution of higher education with the ability to, if requested, provide transcripts showing 60 completed semester credits, an Associate's (or higher) degree, OR a passing score on the ParaPro assessment.

  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team with staff, parents, and the community through the building and maintaining of collaborative, positive relationships and through the ability to follow program direction as provided by teachers and administration.

  • Ability to move quickly from sitting to standing position and to follow students at a fast pace, when needed.

  • Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication that is maintained during high-stress and crisis situations.

  • Ability and desire to work with assistive technology.

  • Basic computer and email skills. Proficient in core educational subject areas
