LEVELS I-V: $35.00 - $65.00 Hourly

Long Beach Community College District is seeking qualified individuals for Sign Language Interpreter positions with experience levels ranging from a Level I Interpreter with emergent proficiency in ASL to a Level V Interpreter with the highest fluency in ASL. Incumbents, under general supervision, will act as a sign language interpreter/translator for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and /or faculty and staff for all classroom and job-related assignments and college sanctioned activities, using a variety of manual and verbal communication systems, with the ability to clearly and accurately present information and foster successful inclusion and interaction between the student, classmates, faculty/staff, and administrators. Level II - $45.00 / hr

Duties

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision of the Disabled Students and Program Services (DSPS) Administrator and/or Human Resources (HR) Manager, acts as a sign language interpreter/transliterator for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and/or faculty and staff for all classroom and job-related assignments and college sanctioned activities, using a variety of manual and verbal communication systems, with the ability to clearly and accurately present information and foster successful inclusion and interaction between the student, classmates, faculty/staff, and administrators.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a non-permanent assignment. interpreters may work in support of student needs through DSPS under the general guidance of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Access Coordinator and/or in support of faculty/staff interpreting needs through HR under general guidance of the Interpreter and Accommodation Services Coordinator, if eligible.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION:

Education, Training and Experience:

Interpreter I

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D with a minimum of six (6) months paid of volunteer interpreting experience. Completion of an interpreter training/educational program or its equivalent is preferred.

  • The incumbent will be required to complete in-house evaluation process score ranging 1-2 and demonstrate emergent proficiency in ASL or other sign modalities as required by an in-house evaluation.

  • Ability to interpret/transliterate independently, on a limited basis, as determined by the DSPS department.

Interpreter II

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D with a minimum of one (1) year of paid interpreting experience. Completion of an interpreter training/educational program or its equivalent is preferred.

  • The incumbent will be required to complete in-house evaluation process score ranging 2-3 and demonstrate proficiency in ASL or other sign modalities as required by an in-house evaluation.

  • Understanding of course content in major areas of study. Ability to work effectively as a solo interpreter in select courses and with a team interpreter, as determined by the DSPS department.

Interpreter III

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D with a minimum of three (3) years of paid interpreting experience; or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Completion of an interpreter training/educational program or its equivalent is preferred.

  • The incumbent must demonstrate fluency in interpreting and/or transliterating and demonstrate proficiency in expressive and receptive interpreting skills as required by an in-house evaluation.

  • The incumbent requires a high level of understanding of course content across the college curriculum.

  • Ability to work successfully as part of an interpreting team in a classroom setting or other campus venues.

  • Ability to work effectively as a solo interpreter in select courses and with a team interpreter, as determined by the DSPS department. Ability to demonstrate conceptual understanding of Deaf culture.

  • The incumbent will be required to complete in-house evaluation process score ranging 3-4.

Interpreter IV

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D with a minimum of four (4) years of paid interpreting experience; or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Completion of an interpreter training/educational program or its equivalent is preferred. Bachelor's degree with a focus on Interpreting, Deaf Education/Culture/ASL Linguistics, or equivalent is preferred.

  • The incumbent must demonstrate a strong fluency in ASL and other student/faculty preferred signing modalities as needed. High degree of competence in simultaneous, consecutive, receptive, and expressive interpreting as determined by an in-house evaluation.

  • In-depth knowledge of Deaf culture and the implications in the post-secondary educational setting is required.

  • The incumbent requires a high level of understanding of course content across the college curriculum.

  • Ability to work successfully alone or with an interpreting team in a variety of on and off campus settings.

  • Ability to work effectively with Deaf students and/or Deaf faculty in a range of settings such as courses with specialized subject matter terminology, student activities, department meetings, one-on-one/small group meetings, committee meetings, etc. as determined by the supervising department (DSPS and/or HR).

  • The incumbent will be required to complete in-house evaluation process score ranging 4-5.

Interpreter V

  • Bachelor's degree with a focus on Interpreting, Deaf Education/Culture/ASL Linguistics, or equivalent and/or written portion of national certification with a minimum of five (5) years of paid interpreting experience; or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Requires a minimum of two (2) years working as a level IV interpreter or equivalent in higher education.

  • The incumbent must demonstrate highest fluency in ASL and other student/faculty preferred signing modalities as needed. High degree of competence in simultaneous, consecutive, receptive, and expressive interpreting. Fluency with the ability to facilitate communication across the college curriculum and other related venues both on and off campus.

  • A high level of understanding of course content across the college curriculum to interpret specialized subject matter terminology, including but not limited to, medical, scientific, vocational, trades, etc.

  • Ability to mentor interpreters in skill and professional development.

  • Ability to work effectively in technical, sensitive, and high-profile settings with Deaf students and/or Deaf faculty including: high level coursework, appointments, presentations, interactions with deans/administrators, platform interpreting, etc., as determined by the supervising department (DSPS and/or HR).

  • The incumbent will be required to complete in-house evaluation process scoring all 5's.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

May require a valid driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance policy.

Meeting the minimum requirements of the position does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidate qualifications will be assessed to determine those who meet and exceed requirements, and are deemed most competitive amongst the applicant pool to proceed.

  • Final selection will be determined by the Hiring Authority
  • PLEASE NOTE: The District reserves the right to utilize a flexible pass point (cut-off score) on any test part, and/or modify any test part. Examination procedures are subject to change as deemed necessary by the Executive Director, Classified Human Resources.*
