Job Summary: Interprets and translates services for limited-English speaking patients and employees at Beth Israel Deaconess in fulfillment of BI-Deaconess' commitment to serve its employees and the community at large.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Enables Medical Center Staff to better meet the needs of limited-English speaking patients and employees; e.g., interpretation between health care providers and patients, including translating consent forms and other written materials as needed; interprets during procedures performed.

  • Abides by the Massachusetts Interpreter Association's Code of Ethics and the MMIA Standards of Practice.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of cultural aspects of patient care in the US and target culture as well as excellent cross cultural skills to provide satisfactory interface between cultures to best serve varying socio economic levels of health care literacy, and be a cultural broker between differing cultural beliefs and practices.

  • Keeps accurate statistical data as required.

  • Maintains and improves expertise through appropriate continuing education. Participates in training and informational sessions as they become available and as required by manager.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • 0-1 years related work experience required.

  • Satisfactory fluency in English and target language(s) at a level that ensures accurate and understandable interpretation. Satisfactory proficiency in medical terminology (i.e., basic anatomy, physiology and diagnostic procedures and treatments) at a level that ensures accurate interpretation.

  • Interpreters are expected to wear, when appropriate/required, protective equipment including lead aprons, scrubs for the O.R. and other equipment mentioned under Social/Environmental Requirements.

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completed medical interpreter training program.

  • National Medical Interpretation Certification.

  • Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by general instructions and practices requiring some interpretation. May make recommendations for solving problems of moderate complexity and importance.

  • Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents.

  • Independence of Action: Ability to follow precedents and procedures. May set priorities and organize work within general guidelines. Seeks assistance when confronted with difficult and/or unpredictable situations. Work progress is monitored by supervisor/manager.

  • Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.

  • Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

  • Knowledge:
    Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

  • Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus

Our job is to support our customer's ongoing court cases by providing Bengali language interpretation. These cases are supported on an as-needed basis and require interpreters with flexible schedules. Hours will differ from assignment to assignment, based on needs of the customer. We provide the interpreter with as much notice as possible, anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks ahead of time. From time to time, we have rush requests due to a cancellation. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * Provides consecutive and simultaneous interpretation between Bengali and English and vice versa * Leads three-way telephonic interpretations between Government representatives and low English proficiency individuals as required * Performs sight translation, occurring when an interpreter is given a written document in one language and asked to read it aloud in another language * Provides quality control review of translated documents as required * Performs other duties as required MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS * Legal ability to work in U.S. * Certified Interpreter (Federal, State or NAJIT certified) or possess one (1) year of experience interpreting in a judicial environment * Highly proficient in both English and Bengali vocabularies typically used in formal, consultative, and casual modes of communication in justice system contexts, including colloquial slang, idiosyncratic slang, and regionalisms * Knowledgeable of specialized vocabulary (terminology) in both English and Bengali related to legal and criminal justice system terminology and immigration procedures, particularly with regard to terminology typically used in Immigration Court hearings * Ability to speak English and Bengali fluently, including high to low levels of language register, regional colloquialisms and slang expressions, and do so with clear and intelligible pronunciation * Ability to perform simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation in a manner that is factually and conceptually accurate without changes, omissions, or additions * Ability to preserve the tone and emotional level of the speaker, as well as manage the delivery, speed and length of the statement (projection, pace and pausing) of the speaker * Ability to maintain appropriate speed and projection while rendering interpretation, and request and incorporate clarification of speaker's statements only when justified ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DESIRED QUALITIES * Federal, State, National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT), or Judiciary Interpreters and Translators Certification Examination (JITCE) certification in interpretation * Experience providing interpretation for Department of Justice (DoJ) Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) court cases WORK ENVIRONMENT * Fast-paced, deadline-driven environment * Work is on an as-needed basis * Office environment with differing locations depending upon assignment SOS International, Ltd.
