$15.75 - $24.27 hourly depending upon qualifications

CDOT, Alamosa has one internship opening. This position is a temporary position and are expected to work 40 hours a week during May, June, July and August, with an option to continue part-time through December or January if the interns are local and their schedules allow. An hour orientation is planned to start paperwork early in May with full-time employment and start date coordinating with any classes and finals that need to be completed.

Description of Job

This unit exists to provide engineering expertise in developing, building, and maintaining a safe and integrated transportation system. The unit manages or oversees projects for upgrading, reconstructing, and maintaining the highway system along with other projects that have federal, state and local funds. Design, oversight of design, management of NEPA documentation, consultant management, construction management along with project

management are provided.

Major duties and responsibilities, include but are not limited to:

  • Assists with the inspection and documentation of permanent construction work, e.g. installation of guardrail, striping, earthwork, structures and HMA paving to ensure that the work is in conformance with the contract special provisions and CDOT Standard Specifications. Learns how to complete documentation in accordance with CDOT Construction Manual.

  • Assists with the inspection and documentation of project traffic control work. Documents work hours of traffic control personnel and quantities of traffic control devices. Trains to complete documentation in accordance with CDOT Construction Manual.

  • Assists with the survey of existing ADA ramps in Region 5. Documents the survey results using Survey 123.

  • Assists with the drafting of design projects using MicroStation, Word, and Excel Software. Takes red-lines and comments from engineers and with assistance is able to draft the design changes in the construction plan set

  • Other duties as assigned

Work Environment:

  • Primarily 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM work hours, Monday through Friday

  • The typical work week will be 40 hours a week in the summer months (May through August) with an option to continue part-time through December or January if the intern is local. An hour orientation is planned to start paperwork early in May with full-time employment and start date coordinating with any classes and finals that need to be completed.

  • Occasional travel my be required during work hours to assigned locations to collect data.

  • Potential overnight travel may be required but is not likely. This would be for inspection trips and would be no longer than two nights once or twice during the summer.

  • May be required to operate CDOT vehicles.

  • Must have current driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

  • Any college student enrolled in a U.S. accredited community college, college or university seeking an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. degree in civil engineering, data sciences, or a field closely related to data sciences

OR

  • A recent college graduate. Recently graduated means the individual should have attended a U.S. accredited college or university and have graduated with an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. degree in civil engineering, data sciences or a field closely related to data sciences within the last three calendar years. (Candidates who have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and are registered as an Engineer Intern are preferred. This is the prerequisite for taking the Professional Engineering (PE) exam.)

OR

  • A certified participant in the Colorado Refugee Services Program.

College Transcripts: Unless applying as a certified participant in the Colorado Refugee Services Program, a legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or a foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application.
