The International Student Advisor, Special Populations is a full-time exempt position that reports to the Assistant Director of International Student Programs. This position works as part of the International Student Programs team to provide intake services, advising, and internship guidance, for International Students with an emphasis on Special Population students. The position also includes coordinating orientation, and quarterly activities, as well as coordinating social media.

This position is an exempt salaried overtime-eligible, at-will, full-time position. Hours of work will include M-F hours as well as some evening, weekend hours and will include travel.

Essential Tasks

Reporting directly to the Assistant Director of International Student Programs, this position will:

Advising and Administrative Support: (45%) ~Flexible

Provide academic advising to international Special Population students including, but not limited to Short Term Program students, Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM) students, and other Cohort Program students. Advising responsibilities include:

  • Assisting students in selecting appropriate courses based upon placement results, student's interest area, and faculty recommendation;

  • Assisting students and staff in the department with course enrollment;

  • Planning an individualized education plan that fulfills all program requirements;

  • Weekly special populations meetings with students or international/local representatives.

Provide administrative support to special population students by:

  • Communicating with partner institutions, agents, and students on pre-departure information;

  • Designing and implementing quarterly on-campus orientation and involvement in New Student Welcome Week;

  • Monitoring academic progress and collaborating with faculty in designing interventions as needed;

  • Assisting students with volunteer internship placement;

  • Assessing student satisfaction with the program. (Quantitative and Qualitative creating program assessment) I.e. surveys;

  • Supporting students through cultural adjustments issues, student life choices, and making referrals to other campus resources as appropriate;

  • Acting as primary contact for assigned overseas university partners.

Provide immigration advising to special program students including:

  • Serving as one of the DSOs (Designated School Official) for the ISP office, working with I-20s as needed;

  • Advising students on maintaining F-1 visa status;

  • Reviewing visa regulations as they pertain to F-1 visa holders.

Orientation coordinator (20%) ~Flexible

As the primary coordinator of ISP Orientation, this person:

  • Develops a schedule of workshops and activities for in advance of each quarter's international student orientation, including a detailed agenda of presentations and activities;

  • Supervises a team of student employees & volunteers who help plan and facilitate each orientation;

  • Develops and controls a budget to cover all orientation costs using only dedicated fees;

  • Works with campus services to reserve rooms, equipment, and catering for all workshops;

  • Works with purchasing office to organize off-campus excursions, including admission, transportation, food, and gratuity costs;

  • Coordinates with staff from other departments for guest presentations and campus tour activities;

  • Manages completion and filing of consent forms for off-campus travel and events;

  • Chaperones, or identifies chaperone for, all off-campus events;

  • Tracks attendance for all orientation events;

  • Organizes and facilitates make-up orientation each quarter;

  • Supervise ISP Student workers and volunteers with orientation and activities;

  • Works with Highline's (Center for Leadership and Services) regarding ISP Events/Activities in coordination with the International Engagement Leadership Advisor.

Activity coordinator (20%) ~Flexible

  • Plan and organize activities for international students, including both off-campus and on-campus activities;

  • Coordinate with the Center for Leadership and Service's programming to plan some joint activities/events;

  • Develop and maintain the activities budget, including submission of required paperwork;

  • Assess success of activities and events;

  • Facilitate annual international student end-of-year celebration;

  • Drive campus vans to designated student activity sites;

  • Coordinate, with the help of other ISP staff, the quarterly scholarship reception;

Social Media (15%) ~Flexible

  • Promote Highline College activities through social media, printed materials, and emailing;

  • Connect with current Highline students and alumni to generate student testimonials in video and written form in conjunction with Global Program Manager, in conjunction with the college's social media manager.

Additional responsibilities:

  • Serve on committees as assigned;

  • As needed, provide general backup advising support when necessary to all international students as requested by the Assistant Director of International Student Programs;

  • Coordinate yearly graduation ceremony for ISP.

Knowledge of:

  • F-1 Visa regulations and requirements by the SEVIS system;

  • Academic courses and program requirements;

  • Cultural differences and adjustment issues for international students;

  • Project management skills.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, Student Development, Educational Counseling, or related field; AND
  • Two years of student advising experience at an institution of higher learning.
