Rutgers Global is the university-wide international affairs office, serving all three Rutgers campuses and Rutgers Health. Rutgers Global promotes Rutgers as a globally engaged institution through immigration processing and academic support services to international students and scholars, study and service-learning abroad programs, international partnership facilitation, and design and support of on-campus and virtual events that address global topics and create cross-cultural networks. Rutgers Global is comprised of the following units: International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), Study Abroad, Global Partnerships and Strategic Initiatives, and the Office of Vice President.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an International Student Advisor for the department of Rutgers Global. The International Student Coordinator (ISC) reports to the Senior International Student Adviser of the Rutgers Global

  • International Student and Scholar Services office. The incumbent works as a member of the student services team to advise and support international students regarding their immigration status and related matters.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO).

  • Assists with processing SEVIS related applications and requests from students, reviewing, updating and maintaining student records, and issuing immigration documents.

  • Offers first-level advisement on programs and services available to students; refer them to specialized advising and support sources.

  • Assists students at the front office, through one-on-one meetings with students, and through workshops and electronic communication.

  • Provides support to International Student Advisors for various processes, including academic status changes and practical training.

  • Participates in special projects involving student engagement and support, working with campus partners on matters relating to international students.

  • Provides administrative support for office organization and programs, including international student orientation and procedure development.

  • Collaborates cross-functionally with other Rutgers Global offices and campus units.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of student affairs, student advising and programming in a higher education setting as well as strong organizational and time management skills.

Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Computer literacy.

  • Good communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to work with multicultural clients, facilitate group presentations, and to navigate various organizational levels.

  • Customer service, and problem-solving skills.

  • Meticulous attention to detail - accurate data entry and record-keeping skills.

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (specifically Word and Excel), some data-based programs, proficiency using the internet as a research tool as well as effective use of social media.

  • Computer proficiency in virtual platforms such as Zoom and WebEx.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students both in-person and via virtual environments.

  • Interest and commitment to meeting the needs specific to international students.

  • To qualify for federal agency approval to issue visa eligibility certificates, successful candidate must have U.S. citizenship or permanent residence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and prior experience living abroad or facility in a second language, preferred.

  • Master's degree in student affairs, counseling, international relations, anthropology, area studies, foreign languages or a related field and experience related to working international students.

  • Knowledge of one or more foreign languages

  • Familiarity with F-1 and/or J-1 regulations and with SEVIS and SEVIS-batch processing software (training will be provided).

Equipment Utilized

  • Sunapsis.

  • SRDB.

  • Banner.

  • Other databases as needed.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • May require occasional travel to other Rutgers campuses (RBHS, Newark, or Camden) and some evening and weekend hours for special student events.
