There is an open position for Maintenance Worker I or II at the Kennewick Maintenance Facility.

Pursuant to Article 30 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement persons wishing to transfer may submit a letter of intent to Clayton Rawlings no later than 5:00pm on July 4, 2024.  

Transfers are limited to full time, permanent, employees within the same job classification. Transfer requests are considered by order of seniority of the requesting employees.

Maintenance Worker I:

Operates a variety of specialized tools and equipment and performs manual work to maintain the County road system.  Participates in repair, construction, and maintenance projects and operates light equipment under direct supervision.

Maintenance Worker II:

Operates heavy and specialized equipment and performs maintenance and repair work to assure effective operation of the County road system.  Assists in training and directing other employees in equipment operations and maintenance activities.

Salary

Maintenance Worker I:   Grade 9, $4,100-$5,320 Monthly

Maintenance Worker II:  Grade 11, $4,4520-$5,865 Monthly Patrols County roadways and assists in the maintenance and repair of assigned portion of the County road system and related structures.  Patches roads using hand tools and specialized equipment.

Operates equipment and hand tools to remove dirt and debris in ditches.   Assists in cleaning catch basins and drywells.

Assist in the operation of equipment and tools to clean and repair culverts.

Drives trucks to haul gravel, dirt, asphalt, and other materials to and from work sites.

Drives trucks and pup trailers to spread rock and gravel on roads and right of ways.

Removes snow and applies sand, salt, and de-icing chemicals for snow and ice control.

Operates water tender to deliver and spread water as directed on County roadways.

Operates heavy and specialized equipment such as woodchipper, street sweepers, brooms, vegetation mowers, patch truck, and earth compactors.

Operates backhoe, motor grader, and front-end loader in training capacity under the direction of senior operators or appointed personnel by the Road Maintenance Manager.

Controls traffic at work sites by setting up warning signs and traffic control devices.   Reads and understands traffic control plans and flags traffic as directed.

Operates jackhammers, string trimmer, mowers and other small equipment to maintain roads, shoulders, ditches, and County right of ways.

Assist in the installation and repair of guard rails, traffic signs, and sign assemblies.

Cuts brush and trims trees from County right of way.

Drives County vehicles as shadow and buffer protection for co-workers and County projects.

Completes regular reports and records regarding materials, time, and equipment utilized to complete to project.

Performs other related duties as assigned.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or G.E.D. and one-year experience in road maintenance and repair or heavy equipment operation; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Washington State driver's license with Class A, CDL endorsement(s) or ability to have within 6 months of employment.

Valid Flagging Certification or ability to have within 3 months of employment.

Valid Industrial First Aid Certification or ability to have within 6 months of employment.

ADVANCEMENT CRITERIA

To receive advancement to the Maintenance Worker II classification the employee will need to be proficient in the operation of the below listed pieces of equipment and must be able to successfully perform the below listed job duties.  Determination of proficiency will be made by the Road Maintenance Manager or County Engineer.  Employees who advance from the Maintenance Worker I classification to the Maintenance II classification will be subject to a new six-month probationary period.

  • 6 Yard Dump Truck

  • 10 Yard Dump Truck (including pup trailer)

  • Sweeper/Broom

  • Vegetation Mower

  • Asphalt patch truck

  • Compactors/Rollers

  • String Trimmer

  • Chainsaw

  • Pole Saw

  • Jackhammer

Job Duties:

  • Loot and rake asphalt

  • Flagging

Knowledge of safe working methods and practices.

Basic mechanical ability and skill in using power tools, hand tools, and equipment of the laboring trade.

Ability to follow both written and oral instructions.

Ability to follow federal, state, and local laws and guidelines.

Ability to learn the proficient operation of heavy equipment.

Ability to work independently or cooperatively in work crews.

Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

Ability to learn County road system, signs, electronic applications and GIS mapping.
