The facility provides primary care to nearly 40,000 residents and a total catchment area of 108,000 people in the surrounding communities. The city is a major center of retail, healthcare, education, tourism, and recreation for this area, referred to as the North Country.

It is home to many of the area's largest employers, as well as several state, county, and federal agencies. The local airport is served by American Airlines with twice daily service to Philadelphia International Airport. The closest Interstate highway is I-81.
