The Internal Communications and Marketing Manager, reports to Campus Safety and Emergency Management Services (CSEMS). The mission critical position provides internal and public communications for departments that report to CSEMS, including Public Safety, Emergency Management and Communications, Global Safety Services, Fire and Life Safety Services, and Administrative and Technical Services. The position is instrumental in the development and strategic oversight of social media communication. Reporting to the Director of Emergency Management and Business Continuity Planning, the position works collaboratively with the individual departments that report to CSEMS to manage, administer, develop and coordinate departmental public relations matters, messaging, digital and social media content. The position assists with disseminating critical emergency communications to the University community as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in communications or a communications related field or equivalent combination of education and experience in law enforcement public and media relations preferred. Master's degree in related field preferred.

  • Experience in a university or college setting preferred.

  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check, participate in initial and random drug screening program.

  • Strong managerial, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be able to work independently and take initiative where/when possible.

  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to be flexible to changing priorities.

  • Proficient in email, Microsoft Office and publishing applications like the Adobe Design suite.

  • Webpage development using WordPress content management system, HTML knowledge, content and digital and social media management skills necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with the University's communications division for critical, time-sensitive, public-facing, external communications.

  • Coordinates internal staff communications systems, including shared online/interactive spaces.

  • Provides interview and publication coordination, assistance, and appropriate training if needed, with point of contacts in various CSEMS section.

  • Prepares and distributes information of internal interest to CSEMS audiences/Listservs.

  • Develops strategic print and electronic communications and messaging for CSEMS.

  • Manages and writes content for the CSEMS websites.

  • Utilizes emerging electronic communications technology and social media outlets to capture the intended audiences.

  • Coordinates with Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director of Emergency Management, Duty Officers, and/or Commanders on work schedules to provide appropriate 24/7 coverage for emergencies and critical incidents.

  • Edits and provides quality control for disseminating flyers, reports/presentations, crime prevention giveaways, and publications for CSEMS communications.

  • Collaborates with the University's Division of Marketing on branding protocols.

  • Screen media inquiries for CSEMS and coordinate the scheduling of any approved interviews with department senior leadership and delegates.

  • Respond directly to and supplement media and news story interviews as needed, including student media groups. Track media inquiries.

  • If practical, report to the DPS Emergency Communications Center (ECC) for the duration of an Orange Alert, or as otherwise directed by the duty commander to coordinate and respond to media-related matters.

  • Edit and publish electronic and print University-wide public safety alerts and notices.

  • Prepares press releases related to DPS matters for approval by senior leadership and/or University News Services.

  • Trains, outlines policies and procedures for CSEMS interns, student employees and/or staff members that are involved in social media content, production/maintenance, and/or videography.

  • Oversees, supports and devises strategy for CSEMS social media and web-based communications.

  • Monitors global trends and remains current with emerging technologies, including digital and social media networks and mobile technology, and news coverage related to policing and public safety service, with emphasis in higher education.

  • Develops communication plans, media kits and portfolios for CSEMS departments.

  • Utilizes practical media solutions to enhance websites and social media and deliver strategic messaging to target audiences.

  • Participates in testing the Orange Alert systems and first-responder emergency drills.

  • As directed, serves as backup support to the Director of Emergency Management and Business Continuity Planning in recording and appropriately disseminating information from various emergency responder teams including various emergency preparedness committees, table-top teams, working groups and task forces as needed.

  • Assists with coordinating community engagement and internal CSEMS events, generates physical content (photo opportunities, interviews, social media posting).

  • Supervises interns, student or temporary employees that are assigned to PIO/Communications jobs/responsibilities.

  • Engages in the University's diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) and performance partnership programs, provides constructive feedback to direct reports; aligns goals with the mission and vision of the University and CSEMS.
