Division Overview:

Montana's Division of Criminal Investigation is a diverse public safety team of professionals who provide a full range of criminal investigative services to state, local, and tribal law enforcement. From homicide investigations to illegal narcotics, criminal records, cybercrime, human trafficking, missing persons, or through training public safety officers, DCI serves as the hub in providing critical law enforcement support. The professionals within DCI are the lifeline of support for public safety. With a doctrine of service, honor, and justice, this statewide organization provides the best in critical, accurate, and timely service to protect our citizens.

Job Overview:

Internships offer experience and a way to see what it's actually like working in a specific field or industry. An internship provides relevant experience in a field to include in a resume as well as providing potential professional references and networking contacts. They provide experience to see if a particular industry or career is the right choice for the student. Exposure to varying career fields provides the ability to compare and better understand where skills and interests are best suited.

The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation internship program is designed to provide the greatest amount of exposure to the variety of programs that are managed. DCI will work with selected intern(s) to tailor their internship experience and location(s) of work to best fit their location in the state and area of interest within DCI.

This is a modified position, legislatively funded through the legislature every two years

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma.

  • Educational field relative to criminal, investigative, or law-enforcement

Special Instructions:

Written endorsement from college instructor. The instructor must identify the number of hours required for the internship and the anticipated date of completion for the student. The instructor shall serve as the point of contact between the University system and the DCI liaison monitoring the student.

The selection procedures to be used in evaluating the applicant's qualification may include, but are not limited to, an evaluation of the résumé and cover letter, a structured interview, performance test, academic transcripts, reference/background checks and fingerprint checks.

Additional materials, references or information submitted by the applicant, but not requested, will not be considered.

Successful applicant(s) will be subject to:

  • Criminal History Fingerprint Check

  • Intensive Background Check

  • Driving History

REAL ID Compliant Credential Required and/or Passport:

State employees are required to present legally binding photo identification at the time of hire. Generally, this is a valid driver license, U.S. Passport or Employment Authorization ID (Form I-766).

All DOJ positions require a valid REAL ID or U.S. Passport within 60 days of hire, effective May 3, 2025.
