The Baldwin County Commission (subsequently referred to as "the County") is seeking a temporary Planning intern. This internship will be for a graduate or undergraduate student studying Community or Urban Planning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Public Administration, Engineering, Geography, or a related field.
Job Description:
The primary function of the intern is to provide administrative and customer service functions to support the Planning and Zoning Department. The intern will be responsible for providing customer service, researching and updating data, and performing basic zoning/subdivision research for the department.
Learn how to review plats and site plans for compliance with zoning/subdivision standards.
Help prepare staff reports for public meetings.
Learn about code enforcement duties and limitations.
Help document code and environmental violations, and communicate with citizens.
Post signs for public meetings.
Review construction plans and help with related permits.
Review local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
Learn how to identify wetlands and other sensitive environments.
Inspect sites for compliance with regulations.
Perform a variety of clerical and administrative support tasks for the Department.
Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with County's policies and procedures.
Computer programs; Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Preference given for applicants with background in GIS.
General office procedures; answering phones, copying, filing. Be able to follow direction as well as take self-initiative, must be courteous, polite and enjoy meeting and talking with people both in-person and on the phone.
Preference for a graduate or undergraduate student studying Community or Urban Planning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Public Administration, Engineering, Geography, or a related field.
Physical and Other Characteristics
Strength and sufficient body movement to conduct field surveys, lift objects, and use hand tools.
Ability to work outdoors while navigating rough terrain.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to bend, stoop, walk, climb hills or ditches, and stand for long periods of time.
