Summary

With supervision from the Manager, the position supports or leads the design and technical development of packaging solutions for new and/or existing products. This role will also partner with the hershey packaging lab to develop test methods and execute testing to optimize existing packaging structures.

Eligible candidates must be available to commit 40 hours per week for this rotation (July 2019 - December 2019).

Major Duties/Responsibilities

With supervision from Manager of Packaging Development or Senior Packaging Engineer, review, recommend, test and implement various proposals for packaging design. Collaborate with project initiator on project objectives and expectations.

Utilize various packaging material substrates in the design of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging that minimizes material usage and labor implications while enhancing retail acceptance.

Helps determine impact on new packaging design to existing and new automation at manufacturing locations.

With the Manager or Packaging Engineer, responsible for determining packaging material specifications to maintain product integrity. This includes development of appropriate design to maximize long term quality and shelf life of product while minimizing cost.

Conduct analytical testing on materials and interpret data findings. Propose design recommendations to manager and/or customer as a result of findings.

Ensure project success by keeping project on schedule through written and oral correspondence while evaluating technical data, i.e. lab results, collaborative tests, distribution tests and line trials.

Develop a professional knowledge of current and emerging trends in packaging technology.

Ensures the accuracy of specifications issued, including mechanical drawings and written text.

Identify potential cost implications to all areas of the business regarding packaging changes and communicate impact to industrial engineering.

Develop packaging bill of materials and enter into project management system for manufacturing/co-pack implementation.

Conducts packaging studies aimed at decreasing costs, reducing material usage while maintaining product/cosmetic integrity.

Partner with procurement on implementation of cost reduction initiatives.

Review internal (Hershey) and external (customer) data to investigate and develop causation of packaging failure and develop/implement corrective actions accordingly.

Identify areas of opportunity to standardize materials to realize volume leverage pricing for packaging components

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities

Basic understanding of other team members' duties and responsibilities.

Ability to design and interpret transport simulations.

Technical knowledge of packaging material fundamentals.

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.

Ability to communicate (oral and written).

Mechanical aptitude and ability.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Education: Pursuing B.S. or M.S. in Packaging Engineering

Experience: 0-3yr experience in Packaging Development

The goal of these engineering internship/co-op positions are to provide opportunities for students to gain real world engineering experience in the Consumer-Packaged Goods and Food processing industry and to help students develop professionally in a progressive manner with an increasing amount of responsibility. The differences between these groups are listed below in this posting. All positions will give you an excellent opportunity to gain real world experience while working under the supervision of experienced Packaging Systems Engineers to meet the Company goals pertaining to process design, product commercialization, or continuous improvement. These positions are ideally suited for students who are interested in and capable of working multiple rotations starting in August 2019 for the Fall Semester. North American Regional Technical Solutions (NA RTS) Packaging Engineering position: The NA RTS engineering group is responsible for development & execution of medium to large capital projects at all of Hershey's North American manufacturing facilities. This includes: * Developing design concepts, capital estimates & functional specifications for potential capital projects. * Specification, purchase, installation & commissioning of packaging equipment & systems * On-site construction, Project coordination & Project Management Responsibilities: Typical Student assignments & responsibilities may include: * Specifying, purchasing, installing, and commissioning new packaging equipment. * Preparing proper documentation of project scope of work, design documentation, and test reports. * Working with multidisciplinary teams including personnel from manufacturing, packaging development, quality assurance, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, and process engineering, equipment manufacturers, and installation contractors. * Designing, troubleshooting and optimizing packaging processes Key Competencies * Passionate with a strong desire to make a difference * Intellectually curious and ability to deal with ambiguity and to learn on the fly * Strong problem solving, business thinking and excellent interpersonal skills * Ability to apply understanding of sciences (mechanical, electric, automation) engineering * Action oriented with good planning and prioritization skills * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * The ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and work both independently and in multidisciplinary groups/teams with a high level of motivation * Good organizational along with creativity, flexibility, and initiative * A desire to work hands-on in the manufacturing environments with equipment & products. * Proficiency with common Windows based computer software programs, including Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Project (is a plus). * Experience or familiarity with AutoCAD Requirements * Eligibility to work in the United States for any employer * A valid Drivers' License and a means of reliable transportation * Willingness and ability to travel to travel to and work in our North American manufacturing facilities or other assignments as required, up to 50% of the time * Availability to work on a flexible schedule from time to time including off-shifts and weekends Education: Must be an undergraduate student majoring in Mechanical, Electrical or Automation Engineering, or similar program from an ABET accredited engineering program at the sophomore level or higher.
