CDOT has an exciting paid internship opportunity for an Automotive/Equipment Service Technician Intern to work in our Durango shop. This is an excellent opportunity to learn through on-the-job experience. You'll have a direct impact on keeping CDOT's fleet safe and operational!

Description of Job

What'll You'll be Doing

  • Assist journey-level technicians in performing standard preventive maintenance including repairing & replacing tires; changing oil & filters; building hydraulic hoses; and grease/lube all vehicles and equipment to make certain said equipment is operational.

  • Provide proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment in CDOT shop.

  • Visually inspect equipment for defects and/or fluid leaks. Determine if problem is mechanical, electrical, or operator error.

  • Identify and use proper PPE. Demonstrates relevant safe work habits. Attends safety meetings and participates in safety conversations. Uses proper tools and uses tools in an appropriate manner to maintain a safe work environment for themselves and co-workers. Follows industry and CDOT rules and guidelines regarding safety.

  • Continuously learning new skills and seeks opportunities to learn from journey-level technicians while on the job.

  • Record in an accurate and timely manner, information relevant to jobs performed; time spent on jobs; and parts & supplies used such as filters, oil, etc.

  • Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Expected work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 7 AM to 3:30 PM, but flexible

  • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where he/she can be reached for the purpose of responding to an emergency

  • Required to lift up to 70 lbs

  • Required to bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks when maintaining and repairing equipment

  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles and heavy equipment

  • Must be able to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions in English

  • May be required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time - hot and cold

  • Exposure to loud noises

  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dust, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin

  • Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600V) and electrical shock

  • Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 9,000-12,000 feet altitude

  • Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates must be either:

  • Any student currently enrolled in an accredited automotive or diesel service technology program.

OR

  • A recent graduate of an accredited automotive or diesel service technology program. Recently graduated means the individual should have attended an accredited college or university and have graduated with an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. degree within three calendar years.

OR

  • A certified participant in the Colorado Refugee Services Program.

College Transcripts: If you are using education to qualify, a legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or a foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Transcripts must show the name of the school and that a degree was conferred. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. Failure to provide a transcript or foreign credential evaluation report may result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position.

Conditions of Employment

Preferred Qualifications

The exceptional applicant will be an entry-level automotive technician or student and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:

  • Recent completion of an accredited program in automotive or diesel service technology.

  • Willingness to learn how to operate all fleet components to be able to perform diagnosis and repair.

  • Dedication to safety.

  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations;

  • Must have basic computer skills, including experience with or the ability to learn Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. Must have the ability to learn new software applications.

  • Requires the ability to read and comprehend operating manuals, equipment and chemical labels, and other written materials.

  • Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Requires constant attention to safe work practices and ability to maintain a safe work area.
