This job opportunity is at the West Hershey Plant in Hershey, PA. We are one of the world's largest chocolate manufacturing facilities and several of Hershey's famous brands are manufactured in our plant.

In this co-op position, the student will be working in an industrial environment and be expected to assume a very "hands-on" role. The co-op will be given challenging, productive assignments similar to those of an entry-level, full-time engineer, allowing him/her to experience a sense of accomplishment and contribution. Specific duties will mainly involve working with packaging equipment and will require the student to work directly with Production, Maintenance, Trades, outside contractors and vendors, Engineering, Quality Assurance and other support team members depending on the assignment.

Although Mechanical Engineering will be the focus, the student will also interact frequently with Chemical, Industrial, Electrical, and Controls engineers. This allows the co-op to understand what role each engineering discipline plays in a manufacturing plant. Many of the concepts that the co-op learns in this position can be applied to other industries.

Responsibilities:

The student will work under the direct supervision and guidance of an experienced engineer and perform the same tasks. Responsibilities will increase as appropriate as the co-op term progresses. Typical assignments are:

  • Investigate and troubleshoot problems

  • Design and optimize processes and equipment

  • Develop scopes, functional specifications, and cost estimates

  • Function as project manager by writing and implementing projects

  • Purchase components and equipment

  • Coordinate installation work and equipment startups

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Verbal and written communication and interactive skills are critical in this assignment

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, etc.

  • Must have completed sophomore year and have a minimum 2.8 GPA

  • Preferred major is Mechanical Engineering

  • Must have reliable transportation

Work Schedule:

A minimum of two co-op terms are required. The terms can be rotational assignments or two terms can be consecutive. (Terms are typically Spring, Summer, and Fall, approximately 4 months each.)

Primary focus at this time is recruiting for a co-op to start working Spring term 2020. Preliminary recruiting for Summer term 2020 is also underway.

The available Intern/Co-op position would have the opportunity to begin in the Spring 2020. Successive rotations would then follow school schedule for co-op experience. Responsibilities This position may include but is not limited to the following: Project Work: Under the guidance of the controls engineer, the intern may be involved in project work which may include electrical design, equipment/instrument installation, equipment/instrument checkout, project startups and maintenance troubleshooting and support. Intern Project: Working on their own assigned project. Projects may involve developing electrical elementary drawings, writing program logic controller (PLC) programs, Human Machine Interface (HMI) screen development. Project work may also include observing existing plant processes, making recommendations, setting up a test design and working with plant operators and supervisors to troubleshoot existing systems. Researching new technologies to implement in production environments. Other: The student intern may also gain experience in talking to vendors, equipment/instrument selection, equipment/instrument set up and training of manufacturing personnel. The intern may also work with process engineering, packaging engineering, quality assurance, industrial engineering and other Hershey personnel. Qualifications Major: Sophomore or junior working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0. Coursework: The candidate must have completed the basic or introductory courses in the following areas: * Electrical Theory * Electronics * Electrical Design Coursework or experience in the following areas is not necessary but would be a plus: * Networking * SCADA Systems * Microsoft Word * Microsoft Excel * Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Programming - Ladder Logic, Function Blocks, Structured Text * Human Machine Interface (HMI) Development – Using Visualization Software * Food Processing or Manufacturing Candidate must have a valid driver's license. This position may involve international travel. Technical Skills: Ability to use basic electrical instruments such as digital multimeter, current probes and signal calibrators. The successful candidate must also have basic electrical troubleshooting experience. Personal Skills: The successful candidate works well with others, is organized, takes initiative, is dependable, has common sense and is flexible and willing to travel.
