POSITION SUMMARY: This is an entry level position where previous machine experience is not a requirement.

This position is part time and limited duration of approximately two to three months. Rate of pay is based on skill, ability and experience $14.25-$20.21.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cleans, lubricates, and maintains machines, tools, and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter; observes and listens to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunction and determine need for adjustment or repair.

  • Working in a team environment, operates machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts; fits and assembles machined parts into complete units.

  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and set up requirements.

  • Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools.

  • Lays out and verifies dimensions of parts.

  • Confers with other machinists to resolve machining problems and challenges to meeting production goals.

  • Performs other tasks related to the work and as assigned by the Machinist Supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of: machine shop theory and procedures; tools and equipment used in the course of the work; numbers, and basic math skills.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Current enrolled or recently completed a program in machining. High School Diploma/GED with demonstrated proficiency in Reading, Writing and Math.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands for this position require continual standing, walking and using fine motor skills for the operation of tools and machinery. May require some lifting or assistance with heavy equipment.

Occasionally requires twisting, turning, bending, climbing, and walking over uneven surfaces. The work is performed inside a shop in which machines are continually running generating varying degrees of noise; the facility may be subject to varying temperatures. Work involves use of chemicals, acids, greases, solvents, petroleum and vapors and fumes.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

ESSENTIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
1.Works indoors: Frequently- Works indoors disassembling and reassembling the machinery.
2.Works outdoors: Frequently- Exposed to outdoor weather when moving between shipyard and on-board work site.
3.Safety equipment required: Follow PPE requirements.
4.Other Exposures: Exposed to smoke, acids, degreasing cleaners, fumes, free silica, dust, paints, solvents, oils, grease, epoxy.
5.Operation of equipment, tools, and/or vehicles: Uses hand and power tools, wrenches, comealong, sledge, portapower air tools, dial indicators and other measuring instruments, 1 ton to 6 ton capacity com-a-longs, slugging wrenches, mauls, hydraulic port-a-powers, forklifts, high lifts, inch to 2 inch shackles and wire rope.

The Machinist III may act in a working leadership role, providing immediate direction to the production team and supports Warn objectives by acting as a key resource to operational leadership. We are offering a signing bonus for this position. As a Machinist III, you would: * Perform a variety of tasks in support of manufacturing operations and other production processes. * Coordinate manufacturing activities and ensure the work of the team is completed each day. * Provide initial feedback and guidance to support growth and development of team members. * Train new team members and temporary associates. * Machine high quality parts in a fast-paced production environment operating a Wickman and a variety of CNC and manual machines (e.g., CNC lathes, CNC Robo drills, mills, drill presses, auto pin presses, and other types of machinery). * May set-up operate and troubleshoot a variety of machine tool equipment to extremely close and complex tolerances. * May be required to work on "first time" projects, set-up and make "first-article" procedures with Quality and Engineering team members. * May lead process development and improvement activities including team improvement boards and participate in other team-associated meetings. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: * High school diploma or equivalent. * Must have experience running a Wickman for at least 2 plus years. * Minimum four to eight years machining experience for level III in a variety of CNCs, manual machines and other machinery is required. * Must have a facilitative/coaching style of engaging others (Leadership, Train the Trainer and/or Coaching training preferred). * Must possess: oProven success with Lean initiatives and promoting continuous improvement. oAbility to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume production environment under limited supervision. oGood mechanical aptitude and the ability to solve complex mechanical or quality process problems. oExcellent interpersonal and collaborative skills. oAbility to communicate effectively and work closely with support groups. oStrong organizational skills to support coordination and facilitation of production activities across multiple areas. oBasic computer skills along with ability/desire to learn more. Classes in blueprint reading, gauge reading and shop math preferred. * May be frequently required to walk, bend, squat, or twist as well as repetitively push or pull. Is continuously standing, repetitively grasping and using fine manipulation with the hands. * Must be able to frequently lift up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
