Library Systems & Services is seeking 5 Interns to assist the Moreno Valley Public Library to support the grant-funded Lunch at the Library program for kids and teens. Under general supervision, the Intern will provide assistance in designing and hosting craft/STEM activities at youth community meal sites from June through August 2024. In addition, the Intern will perform a variety of moderately complex technical and paraprofessional duties at the library service desk. This temporary, non-exempt position is based at the Main Library (a youth meals site) but requires travel to other youth community meal sites at parks or schools. The successful candidates will be open to developing their workplace and presentation skills, to learning more about library work and resources, and serving the community.

Lunch at the Library is a project of the California State Library, supported with funds from the State of California.

Essential Duties/Responsbilities: 

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. 

  •        Provides excellent customer service
  • Provides information regarding programs, events, collections, etc.

  •        Assist staff with Library programs, including planning, promotion, presentation, and set-up/breakdown of program spaces
  • Assist staff with maintaining a clean and sanitary meal site at the Main Library

  •        Assists patrons with locating materials or the reference desk, using computers or maker equipment or explaining procedures (checking out, logging onto the Internet, making copies, etc.)
  • Operate and maintain maker/STEAM equipment.

  •        Checks in and processes library materials as necessary
  • Shelves library materials

  •        Addresses or escalates patron conduct or safety issues to appropriate management
  • Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library. In addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library(ies).

  •        Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records
  • Other duties as assigned

    Requirements

    An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.

    • Must have completed 10th grade and be able to obtain a work permit.
    • Must have reliable means of transportation to the library and community meal sites
    • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include a combination of days, evenings and weekends
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Able to communicate with diverse populations, English/Spanish bilingual a plus.

    Benefits

    • HOURLY RATE: $16.00
    • HOURS PER WEEK: 20
    • TEMPORARY POSITION: Through August 31, 2024
