BASIC PURPOSE

The intern will assist the Transportation section in performing traffic studies including traffic counts and turning movement counts. With nearly 345 miles of roadway lanes; 3,800 streetlights and traffic signals; 525 miles of water, sewer and stormwater lines; 250 acres of maintained parks and facilities; 125,000 square feet of occupied buildings; a fleet of 240 vehicles; and numerous volunteer programs, Public Works is the largest and most diverse department within Lacey's municipal organization.

Working hours are generally between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. but will also include a.m. and p.m. peak data collection. Schedule will be flexible based on the student's class schedule. Number of hours per week to be determined. Work will be limited to 16 hours per week during school attendance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

These duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists with performing traffic studies, to include traffic counts and turning movement counts.

  • Field verification of intersection diagrams, traffic collision analysis, delay studies, speed studies.

  • CAD work using AutoCAD.

  • Uses Microsoft Excel, Access, and MSWord for various projects.

  • General filing and other miscellaneous work and projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Area(s) of study:

Must be a current Civil Engineering-CAD Technology student or a student in a closely related program.

Special Requirements or License(s):

  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.

  • Must pass a background investigation.

  • Must have a valid Washington State driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier, OR must be able to provide own transportation to and from job, meetings, and related job sites.

  • Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational program leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree.

  • In good standing at their college or university. Students must retain their status until the end of the internship. In some cases, students may be enrolled in technical certificate programs in particular fields relevant to the City's business objectives.

  • Students may work during the summer without being enrolled; however they must be returning to school and pre-registered for the fall term.

  • Considering a profession related to some aspect of the City's business objectives. Generally, interns should be advanced enough in their educational programs to have begun taking courses in a field related to their work at the City. However, in some cases, previous work experience or education may substitute for their current academic program of study.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Basic quantitative skills, including math, logic, and statistics.

  • Personal computer operation, including Windows, MS Office word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications. (AutoCAD proficiency desirable.)

  • Map reading and interpreting basic engineering drawings.

Ability to:

  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment:

  • Working in and around moving traffic.

  • Occasional exposure to dangerous machinery.

  • Occasional extreme weather conditions.

Physical Abilities:

  • Hearing, speaking, or otherwise communicating to exchange information in person or on the phone.

  • Ability to hammer spikes into the roadway using a sledgehammer.

  • Operating a computer keyboard and other office equipment and the ability to grasp and hold and effectively use assigned personal protective equipment, equipment, and tools for the position.

  • Sitting or otherwise remaining stationary for extended periods of time.

  • Lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects up to thirty (30) lbs. Some assistance is available to mitigate the heaviest lifting.

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching, reaching above shoulders and horizontally or otherwise positioning oneself to accomplish tasks.
