Job Description:

The Outside/Inside Plant Engineering Intern will provide support to the Network Development Team. The role will involve drafting schematic, electrical and scale drawings for engineer job plans and specifications. Duties may also include updating databases, developing and updating provisioning sheets and site walks to validate poles, pullboxes and manholes, and addresses. Frequent interaction with Planning and Engineering is required to coordinate related work activities. Performs other related, marginal duties associated with engineering as required.

Intern may participate in:

  • Draft tracings of engineering job plans and specifications to meet engineers' requirements. Included schematic, electrical and scale drawings of outside plant, land and buildings, switching and transmission system drawings.

  • Develop/modify provisioning sheets, graphs, and charts as required.

  • Make revisions to existing tracings as requested by Engineering.

  • Update various databases and systems.

  • Interact and communicate with engineers when necessary to determine drafting requirements.

  • Perform other related, marginal duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Engineering Technology, Computer Science or Information Sciences with a technical concentration from a four-year college or university.

  • Completion of any one or combination of the following: drafter or architectural, mechanical or similar type of drafting courses.

  • Microsoft Office Suite: Familiar with the use of all applications from the Microsoft Office Suite to create reports, analyzes data, and present information.

  • Ability to learn to utilize new software applications with little/no training and documentation essential.

Intern period: Part-time, year-round

Hours per week: TBD by supervisor and intern

Work Schedule: TBD by supervisor and intern

Duties Summary An engineering technician at this level is responsible for carrying out a sequence of standardized or prescribed operations typically requiring a practical background knowledge of engineering methods and practices in the specialization or area of assignment. An Engineering Technician V may also perform as a working supervisor for a small group of engineering aids performing work at the I to IV levels; and perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualification Requirements To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements: Education: Graduation from high school, or equivalent, with courses in mathematics. Engineering-Support Experience: Four years of work experience in one or a combination of the engineering-oriented functions such as inspection, testing, designing, surveying, drafting, and construction, which required the knowledge of engineering terminology and the ability to use mathematical skills in the solution of engineering-support or engineering problems. At least one year of the required Engineering-Support Experience must have been comparable to the Engineering Aid IV level, or two years of experience comparable to the Engineering Aid III level in State government. The Engineering Aid III performs a variety of routine technical, non-professional engineering tasks. Works on assignments of a frequently recurring nature, where detailed procedures are established. The Engineering Aid IV performs a variety of standardized, non-professional, technical engineering functions; and may serve as lead-person for a small group of lower level engineering aids. Supervisory Experience: For positions that supervise, applicants MUST possess supervisory aptitude. Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects of supervision, e.g., by serving as a group or team leader; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; or by the completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; and/or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor in indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
