Aerojet Rocketdyne seeks a Quality Engineering Intern for Summer 2020 to join our facility in Canoga Park, California (Los Angeles area).

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Under close supervision, the intern will support the Quality Engineering Organization through the following:

30% - Creating and releasing product definition documentation such as procurement clauses, inspection requirements, first article inspection reports, etc.

20% - Reviewing and approving drawings for inspectability.

20% - Identifying and implementing process improvements/advancements and reporting status.

20% - Establishing data collection methods. Learning and applying understanding of variation and statistical analysis to ensure process robustness.

10% - Providing real-time analysis of quality drivers, non-conformances, performance, customer escapes and inefficiencies.

Requirements

Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor's (preferably at Sophomore/Junior level) or Master's degree in a related engineering discipline.

US Citizenship required. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Additional Requirements:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.

  • Must demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communications skills, be proficient in the use of PC, internet, intranet and electronic office applications.

  • Must be adept at taking direction, work well with teams and be customer focused.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform on task and follow up on assignments. Must be able to handle multiple projects at the same time and have basic project management skills.

  • Safe work practices, proper ethics and attention to detail are required. Candidate must work with moderate guidance on projects with short-term focus. This position requires a postive attitude and personal interaction with various team members and customers.

Work Environment/Physical

Requirements:

The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels.

May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. May also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary.

Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.

The Specialist Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that delivered products and/or services conform to contractual and the Company's requirements by designing, implementing, evaluating and continually improving quality assurance and control methods and systems. The Specialist Quality Engineer will translate design drawings and contractual requirements into a comprehensive, understandable and functional quality plan; monitor and closely support manufacturing, inspection and supplier functions that relate to product quality; coordinate with the customer the establishment of government quality requirements and material review board activities; represent quality assurance in corrective action activities; and participate in audits or product evaluation to determine the effectiveness of the quality assurance program. Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each) 25% - Visit suppliers and perform investigation and root cause analysis to drive improvements into their processes. Be accountable for assigned suppliers' performance and ensure suppliers are performing with a 100% quality rating. 25% - Visit suppliers to review product & process issues. Interface with internal and external customers; i.e., engineering, manufacturing, supplier, procurement to ensure requirements are met. Analyze supplier processes and planning to verify compliance with purchase orders, engineering drawings, processes, specifications, etc. 15% - Visit suppliers to review technical, quality and other contractual requirements and ensure the supplier has an adequate understanding to develop a plan to meet all the requirements. Review the suppliers' plans for adequacy and ensure all requirements are met. This includes, pre-award, post award, manufacturing readiness and other periodic reviews as requested. 15% - Work with suppliers to resolve issues with purchase order inspection packages. Investigate and report supplier quality history as requested by quality engineering or Quality & Mission Assurance (Q&MA) management. 10% - Participates in managing the supplier ratings/scorecard system and overseeing periodic meetings. 10% - Work closely with Planners, Program Quality Engineers, and Receiving Inspection to resolve supplier issues. Requirements Requires a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline and nine (9) years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. US Citizenship Only Required. Dual Citizenship does not meet job qualifications. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship). Additional Requirements and Preferred Qualifications: * Experience in manufacturing and/or inspections required. * Strong problem solving, RCCA and investigation experience required. * Experience with composites is desired. * Experience with electronic components is desired. * Certified Quality Engineer strongly preferred.
