Purpose/Description:

The internship role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a professional environment, and to support/promote the graduate's career goals through contact with professionals in their field of study. The internship experience enables students to participate in professional activities for Volvo Penta by working on important and innovative projects. Internships are structured learning experiences where interns and our full time professionals work together on projects within their selected organization. The internship allows students to integrate knowledge and skills in a manner that is mutually beneficial to the student and Volvo Penta.

The Intern will be responsible for providing support to the Product & Customer Support department.

Core Responsibilities

  • Accept and return phone contacts from end customers addressing basic product related concerns and instructing customer how to find dealers through our website

  • Monitor and respond to End Customer Email and Electronic Inquiries from the Volvo Penta website and other sources (partner websites, social media, etc.)

  • Assist Customer Relations and Technical Support representatives with basic office tasks such as small package shipments, mailings, data entry, analysis, and creating reports

  • Support Volvo Action Services agents promptly with Warranty, Campaign and Owner's registration questions using the company's website and internal databases as resource

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • An eagerness to learn, ability to work independently, and readiness for responsibility

  • Excellent organizational skills and an acute attention to detail

  • Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite to include PowerPoint, Word and Excel is required

  • Basic computer skills. Responsible use of a networked computer running several database programs

  • Effective personal communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Ability to act as a representative of Volvo Penta of the Americas in contacts with dealers and consumers in a clear and professional manner. Proper grammar and spelling skills are a must

  • Basic office equipment operation; phone, copier, fax, etc.

Method of Performance Evaluation or Supervision for this program

  • Performance feedback from the supervisor. Also, intern will make a presentation on this assignment to the management team at the end of their internship

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Applicants must be current students that are scheduled to graduate after May 2019

  • Applicants must be pursuing a BA/BS degree at an accredited school and have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours of undergraduate work prior to the start of the internship

  • History of academic achievement: GPA of 3.0 or higher required

  • Basic knowledge of pleasure boats and/or pleasure boat engine packages preferred

  • Participation in school or extracurricular activities and experience in leadership roles is a plus

Other Requirements

  • May require travel to our facility in Suffolk

  • Intern must provide their own transportation to work

  • Intern must provide their own living accommodations in the local area

POSITION SUMMARY The person qualified for this position is a Senior Member of the Product Support group, providing information regarding the application, troubleshooting and repair of Volvo Penta Industrial engines and transmissions, to Industrial OEM's, Industrial Distributors, Key Industrial Dealers and internal VPA personnel. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES * Respond to requests for information from Industrial OEM's, Industrial Distributors, Key Industrial Dealers and internal VPA personnel * Provide technical assistance to our Industrial OEM's, Industrial Distributors and Key Industrial Dealers via phone, e mail, fax or on-site if required * Act as a liaison between Industrial OEM's, Industrial Distributors and Key Industrial Dealers and Product and Manufacturing Engineering providing data to resolve quality issues * Assist with the composition and implementation of Service and OEM Bulletins and Campaigns * Proactively create and distribute service information to all appropriate groups * Maintain currency and act as a subject matter expert on all applicable electronic diagnostic tools * Advise and assist Industrial OEM's, Industrial Distributors, Key Industrial Dealers and internal VPA personnel as to correct VPA Warranty policy and procedures * Assist the Warranty department with warranty claims requiring pre-authorization * Ensure that all necessary paperwork, including Argus case details, parts orders, and warranty authorizations are processed in a timely manner * Maintain a database of service and technical information and make a standard set of updated information available to all current and new Technical Service department personnel * Maintain a complete record of Industrial OEM's, Industrial Distributors and Key Industrial Dealer interaction in the appropriate database * Support and update field diagnostic equipment as needed * Provide special training to Industrial OEM's, Industrial Distributors, Key Industrial Dealers and internal VPA personnel as needed * Assist with training of new hires within the Technical Service and Field Service department * Promote the use of Volvo Penta Partner Network * Promote the use of the Argus case management tool * Perform other duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned by management to support Volvo Penta goals and objectives SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED * "Subject matter expert" level knowledge of troubleshooting and repair of Industrial Diesel power products * In-depth knowledge of Industrial Engines and Control Systems * In-depth knowledge of Industrial trade practices and activities via direct experience or extensive Industrial Distributor or Dealer interaction * Strong written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills * High ability to work independently, without direct supervision, and manage multiple objectives and cases at one time * Strong knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Products (Power Point, Excel, etc.) * Mastery of all PC based and / or electronic Diagnostic troubleshooting equipment in use * Extensive Customer service / technical face-to-face and / or call center experience * Ability to advise and mentor others regarding customer service techniques * Ability to provide group training to Industrial OEM's, Industrial Distributors, Key Industrial Dealers and internal VPA personnel EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE * Associates degree or Certificate in Diesel or Industrial Mechanics; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's Degree is preferred * Minimum of four years Industrial Engine OEM, Distributor or Dealer technical experience * Strong mechanical expertise in troubleshooting, repair, overhaul and installation of Industrial products.
