Position Summary

Alexion is seeking a highly motivated intern with educational experience in applying accepted accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely results and to ensure appropriate account control procedures. This position will be a member of a cross-functional, multi-national, accounting team responsible for critical accounting areas, internal financial analysis, accounting technical research and financial reporting. This position will have interaction with Alexion business leaders, senior accounting management and global accounting teams.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

The position and its responsibilities will have an emphasis on Corporate Accounting, Revenue Accounting, Global Legal Entity Accounting and SEC Financial Reporting. The position will support accounting and reporting functions in the following capacities:

SEC Financial Statement Preparation

  • Assist with the preparation and population of quarterly financial statements

  • Assist with the tie out of select financial statement areas

  • Run supporting schedules from the accounting system

  • Partner with reporting team and external auditors during the quarterly reporting cycle

Peer Research & Technical Accounting

  • Assist with peer research on disclosures of technical items

  • Ad hoc technical research projects as needed

Accounting & Internal Controls

  • Assist in preparing journal entries for key areas of responsibility

  • Preparation of key internal controls, within Revenue Accounting and other areas

  • General ledger account reconciliations

  • Fluctuation analysis

Internal Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Develop analytics/metrics to facilitate the understanding of changes in key accounts and metrics

  • Assist in preparation of internal financial reporting packages distributed to key accounting leaders

Project and Ad Hoc Areas of Focus

  • Assist in the drafting of standard operating procedures

  • Partner on other ad hoc data analysis as needed on projects

  • Perform testing procedures for planned system implementations

Essential Qualifications:

  • No prior accounting work experience necessary

  • Intermediate level with Microsoft Office Products required (MS Excel/ Word)

Education:

  • In process of completing bachelor's or master's degree in Accounting, preferred

Reporting to the Associate Director, Corporate Accounting, this role will require a CPA with analytical and technical skills, with an ability to work independently and oversee multiple areas of responsibility. Specifically, the responsibilities will include managing quarterly and annual SEC reporting; interacting with internal and external auditors; performing accounting research; and various other duties for the financial reporting department. Principal Responsibilities Key responsibilities include the following: SEC Reporting: * Drive execution for SEC reporting process, including management of entire process from initiation of documents through filing. Build appropriate process to ensure timely and accurate filing. * Draft new footnotes and required disclosures, and review all information and data which is included in the 10-K, 10-Q (management's discussion and analysis, risk factors, etc.), Proxy Statement and other SEC filings for accuracy. * Coordinate with other departments (legal, tax, HR, etc.) to prepare documents for filing with SEC. * Evaluate new accounting rules and regulations to assess and document the impact on the company's accounting and disclosure requirements. * Ensure compliance with SEC financial reporting rules and regulations and educate finance team members on key disclosure rules and regulations. * Review and manage disclosure checklists for 10-K, 10-Q and other SEC filing. * Preparation of documents for Disclosure Committee meetings * Review and manage xBRL detail tagging; manage third party relationship with financial reporting vendor. * Manage, train and monitor offshore shared service staff on financial reporting tasks including preparation of disclosures and analyses, as well as maintenance of SOPs. * Preparation of the Company's 401k financial statements which includes coordination with other departments and external auditors. Internal Controls: * Work with Internal Audit to ensure compliance with GAAP and SEC rules and regulations, including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act as it relates to financial reporting. * Monitor and revise policies and procedures to ensure the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls over the financial reporting process. * Design controls and maintain SOX documentation for the external financial reporting process. * Provide support to Internal Audit department. Accounting and Other Responsibilities: * Assist with external audit requirements related to disclosure and financial reporting. * Build and manage relationships with various business partners, including the tax, legal, treasury, business development and FP&A departments to ensure that they have appropriate financial reporting information. * Participate in cross functional projects related to financial reporting, including accounting research as needed, and support of accounting areas. * Manage audit of Company's 401k Plan and other statutory requirements. * Lead special projects in the finance area, including finance master data projects. Qualifications * Minimum of 4-7 years of experience working in a position directly involved in the preparation of the SEC filings (10K, 10Q, 8K). * Big 4 audit experience preferred. * Excellent understanding of GAAP accounting principles with a strong knowledge of SEC reporting regulations; understanding of SAP systems or other large ERP systems is a plus. Education * Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
