Job Description:


  • Data mining, data visualization and data analytics of real estate catastrophe risk exposure

  • Supporting the development of thought leadership in the management of infrequent, high-severity catastrophes

  • Conduct market research, analyze research trends, and contribute to research reports

  • Understand and communicate data trends that support community resilience to the effects of catastrophes

  • Work to support the wider team to generate analytics to support thought leadership for risk reduction and resilience initiatives

  • Work on defined tasks under the close supervision of senior industry specialists

  • Receives general supervision and guidance from more experienced team members.

  • Participates in Internship Program activities and events to include: on boarding, educational activities, information sessions, product demos and social events.

  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as required.

Job Qualifications:


  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor or Master degree program pursuing a STEM related degree at an accredited 4-year college or university

  • Minimum of two years of relevant coursework completed. Ideally three years of relevant coursework completed.

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative collegiate grade point average, on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent

  • Prior internship or co-op experience preferred

  • Participation in campus activities related to field preferred

  • Demonstrated leadership experience through participation in on-campus activities, educational forums and/or prior work experience

Assignment Specific Experience

  • Experience analyzing and identifying trends in data

  • Experience doing research, and writing and presenting findings

  • Experience creating graphics to visualize data in creative way

  • Enthusiastic about natural catastrophes with a desire to explain risk

  • Experience or passion for social media/digital marketing is not required, but a plus


  • Ability to work in a dynamic, cross-functional environment, with a strong attention to detail;

  • Proven ability to assume a strong sense of responsibility and ownership amidst ambiguity

  • Proven ability to handle challenging tasks and to multi-task

  • Effective communication skills and ability to explain complex models in simple terms;

  • Strong relationship building and collaborative skills;

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong technical aptitude. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications, such as Word, Excel, Access, Project and PowerPoint. SQLServer and Python/R knowledge beneficial.

This internship provides an excellent opportunity for a student with significant coursework in business administration, human resources, or a related discipline. The candidate chosen for this position will not only get excellent paid work experience, but also have exposure to on-the-job experience in a variety of areas within the human resources discipline. This internship is only open to students who are currently enrolled in a Bay Area undergraduate or graduate school and can dedicate 16-20 hours during the business week at the District's downtown Oakland office. Representative Functions Major duties of this internship generally include, but are not limited to, the following: * Assists with full cycle recruitment and selection * Assists with screening resumes and applications for open positions * Assists with the scheduling of interviews and testing * Attends job fairs as an AC Transit representative * Conducts reference checks * Conducts fingerprinting * Assists with coordinating first day set up with new employees and hiring managers * Supports recruiters with pre-employment activities including planning and executing orientations, preparing new hire paperwork, and reviewing paperwork for completeness Minimum Qualifications Education: Current full-time college undergraduate and graduate student with significant coursework in business administration, human resources, industrial/organizational psychology or a closely related discipline. Must have strong oral and written communication skills. Should be organized, flexible, and able to take direction from multiple team members. Experience: Basic to intermediate skills with MS Word and Excel; HRIS and/or applicant tracking system experience is a plus, but not required. Previous professional work experience is not required. Additional Information Physical Requirements: Must maintain the physical condition necessary to perform tasks in an office setting operating a personal computer, keyboards and other peripheral equipment. Must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 25 lbs. Undergraduates are paid $16 - $18 per hour and Graduate students are paid $19 per hour.
