Overview:

This Controls Engineering Co-Op has the potential for the selected candidate to work 3 consecutive rotations within the Controls Engineering department depending on your availability.

The available Intern/Co-op position would have the opportunity to begin in the Spring 2020. Successive rotations would then follow school schedule for co-op experience.

Responsibilities

This position may include but is not limited to the following:

Project Work: Under the guidance of the controls engineer, the intern may be involved in project work which may include electrical design, equipment/instrument installation, equipment/instrument checkout, project startups and maintenance troubleshooting and support.

Intern Project: Working on their own assigned project. Projects may involve developing electrical elementary drawings, writing program logic controller (PLC) programs, Human Machine Interface (HMI) screen development. Project work may also include observing existing plant processes, making recommendations, setting up a test design and working with plant operators and supervisors to troubleshoot existing systems. Researching new technologies to implement in production environments.

Other: The student intern may also gain experience in talking to vendors, equipment/instrument selection, equipment/instrument set up and training of manufacturing personnel. The intern may also work with process engineering, packaging engineering, quality assurance, industrial engineering and other Hershey personnel.

Qualifications

Major: Sophomore or junior working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0.

Coursework: The candidate must have completed the basic or introductory courses in the following areas:

  • Electrical Theory

  • Electronics

  • Electrical Design

Coursework or experience in the following areas is not necessary but would be a plus:

  • Networking

  • SCADA Systems

  • Microsoft Word

  • Microsoft Excel

  • Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Programming

  • Ladder Logic, Function Blocks, Structured Text
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI) Development Using Visualization Software

  • Food Processing or Manufacturing

Candidate must have a valid driver's license.

This position may involve international travel.

Technical Skills:
Ability to use basic electrical instruments such as digital multimeter, current probes and signal calibrators. The successful candidate must also have basic electrical troubleshooting experience.

Personal Skills:
The successful candidate works well with others, is organized, takes initiative, is dependable, has common sense and is flexible and willing to travel.

The goal of these engineering internship/co-op positions are to provide opportunities for students to gain real world engineering experience in the Consumer-Packaged Goods and Food processing industry and to help students develop professionally in a progressive manner with an increasing amount of responsibility. The differences between these groups are listed below in this posting. All positions will give you an excellent opportunity to gain real world experience while working under the supervision of experienced Packaging Systems Engineers to meet the Company goals pertaining to process design, product commercialization, or continuous improvement. These positions are ideally suited for students who are interested in and capable of working multiple rotations starting in January for Spring 2020 semester. North American Regional Technical Solutions (NA RTS) Packaging Engineering position: The NA RTS engineering group is responsible for development & execution of medium to large capital projects at all of Hershey's North American manufacturing facilities. This includes: * Developing design concepts, capital estimates & functional specifications for potential capital projects. * Specification, purchase, installation & commissioning of packaging equipment & systems * On-site construction, Project coordination & Project Management Responsibilities: Typical Student assignments & responsibilities may include: * Specifying, purchasing, installing, and commissioning new packaging equipment. * Preparing proper documentation of project scope of work, design documentation, and test reports. * Working with multidisciplinary teams including personnel from manufacturing, packaging development, quality assurance, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, and process engineering, equipment manufacturers, and installation contractors. * Designing, troubleshooting and optimizing packaging processes Key Competencies * Passionate with a strong desire to make a difference * Intellectually curious and ability to deal with ambiguity and to learn on the fly * Strong problem solving, business thinking and excellent interpersonal skills * Ability to apply understanding of sciences (mechanical, electric, automation) engineering * Action oriented with good planning and prioritization skills * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * The ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and work both independently and in multidisciplinary groups/teams with a high level of motivation * Good organizational along with creativity, flexibility, and initiative * A desire to work hands-on in the manufacturing environments with equipment & products. * Proficiency with common Windows based computer software programs, including Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Project (is a plus). * Experience or familiarity with AutoCAD Requirements * Eligibility to work in the United States for any employer * A valid Drivers' License and a means of reliable transportation * Willingness and ability to travel to travel to and work in our North American manufacturing facilities or other assignments as required, up to 50% of the time * Availability to work on a flexible schedule from time to time including off-shifts and weekends Education: Must be an undergraduate student majoring in Mechanical, Electrical or Automation Engineering, or similar program from an ABET accredited engineering program at the sophomore level or higher.
